Melvin Hittle 82, of the Parma/Nyssa area, died July 8 of natural causes; his body was recovered from the Snake River three days later. Mel was the co-owner of Hittle's Repair in Nyssa with son Jim and grandson Chris. He loved fixing vehicles, solving problems, working out puzzles and playing cribbage with multiple family members. Mel was also actively involved with the American Legion/VFW having served honorably in the US Army from 1951-53 with a tour in Korea.
In addition to his many indoor hobbies, Mel loved being outdoors. He loved raising a myriad of animals, fishing, rock hounding and watching the deer out in the pasture. Mel was also known for helping anyone in need, he always had an anecdote or other tidbit of knowledge to share and you always left with the image of his shining smile that reached to his bright blue eyes.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Ray; two brothers and two sisters; his son Donald, and friend Carol. He is survived by wife Barbara; children Jim (Brenda), Beverly Gee (Don), Bonnie Scherer (Stephen) and Brenda Nelson (Herb); 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; extended family (Dawn, Randy, and Devon) and numerous close friends. As Mel said after every meeting: "See you while ago".
A service will be held Saturday, 21 July at 10:30 a.m. at Hilltop Cemetery in Nyssa under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel. A reception will follow at the Catholic Fellowship Hall on Locust St. in Nyssa.
