Roy Eugene Herman
January 14, 1935 - September 11, 2013
Roy Eugene Herman, 78, of Marsing, Idaho passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2013 in Portland, Oregon.
Roy was born January 14, 1935 in Caldwell, Idaho to Raymond and Beatrice Marsing Herman. Roy started school at Washington Elementary in Caldwell, Idaho. He then moved to Marsing in 1944 when Ray Herman entered the hardware business with Frank Motzko. Roy graduated from Marsing High School in 1953 where he had enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. The 1953 MHS basketball team won the first District championship for Marsing ever..."we were co-champions with New Plymouth."
Roy went on to graduate from the University of Portland with a B. S. in Physics in 1957. That same year he entered the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant. In 1958, Roy met and married Mary Hoffmeyer in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two children were born to this union, Jennifer and Jeffrey. Under Air Force sponsorship, Roy went on to graduate from the University of Utah with a M. S. in Physics in 1963. He worked for three years at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico and later at the Air Force Technical Applications Center outside of Washington D. C. In 1968, Roy and his family returned to Marsing where he became a partner with Ray and Bea Herman in the Marsing Hardware store. Roy was a partner and then sole owner of the business for 33 years to the day. At times, Roy served as Mayor and City Councilman for the City of Marsing, volunteer fireman for the Marsing Volunteer Fire Department and an EMT on the Marsing Volunteer Ambulance Service. Roy sold the 80-year old family hardware business in 2001 and retired to his farm. Roy turned his attentions to volunteering for the Owyhee County Historical Museum and documenting local history. At times he remarked that "he was busier retired than when he ran the store." In 2011, Roy met his current wife, Bonnie, and while only together for a short-time, they made the most of their time together enjoying family and friends between Idaho and Oregon.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Bea (Marsing) Herman and his brother, Dr. Ralph Herman. Roy is survived by his wife Bonnie, daughter Jennifer Whittington, son Jeffrey (Emily) Herman and six grandchildren: Jason Whittington, Jordan Whittington, Lindsey Whittington, Lydia Herman, Isabella Herman and Juliette Herman.
