John was born April 14, 1966 at the Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco, California to Rodney W. and Patricia A. Dakan while his father was attending Mortuary College. He was named after his paternal great-grandfather. John grew up in Creswell, Oregon graduating from Creswell High School in 1985. He enjoyed the Future Farmers of America, having a lifelong dream of one day owning a horse training operation. Much of his interest in farming came from his teacher and beloved mentor, Ken Ball. Following high school, John joined the US Navy where his service was shortened by an aggravated injury suffered in a high school automobile accident.
John married Debra Muscutt in Long Beach, Washington on September 11, 2011.
John loved to give back to the community and was an active volunteer with the Wilder Fire Department. He also served with the Chinook, Ilwaco, Long Beach and Pacific County fire departments while he lived in Washington. He was trained as a firefighter1/EMT and wild land firefighter and was looking forward to starting his EMT training with the Wilder Department.
John will be remembered as a 'can-do' kind of guy. There wasn't much that he couldn't do. He had a winning smile and John Wayne Stride. John suffered a debilitating stroke on August 7, 2014 while working for Feller Trucking Company of Caldwell.
John leaves behind his wife, Debra of Wilder; parents, Rodney W. and Marilyn Dakan of Caldwell; 3 sisters, Michiele (Scott) Nichols of Glenns Ferry, Margaret Terrarosa and Melinda Ward, both of Nampa; 4 nephews, John Weber and Michiel Terrarosa, both of Nampa, Alex Ward of Caldwell and Andrew Heckathorn of Glenns Ferry; his uncle, James R. Dakan, HI, his favorite Aunty Fern, Marilyn Nishitani Smith, DNP (Chester) of Roswell, NM and Aunt Donna Crans (Jack) of Parma; numerous cousins; and his wonderful dog, Sugar.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia A.; grandparents, T.W. & Vera Dakan; and Aunt Betty Dakan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Wilder Fire Department, PO Box 222, Widler, ID 83676; or the National Future Farmers of America, PO Box 68960, Indianapolis, IN 46268-0960 would be appreciated.
