Betty Marie Panther
January 9, 1919 - November 29, 2012
Betty Marie Panther passed away peacefully in Nampa, Idaho November 29, 2012. Born Betty Marie Olsen on January 9, 1919, she was the daughter of Axel Olsen and Dorothy Holst Olsen, of Omaha, Nebraska. Betty had a single sister, Dorothy. Betty was raised in Omaha and worked for Ohio National Life Insurance Company as an administrative secretary. In 1947, she married John Panther, of Spokane Washington. John's career in the United States Air Force subsequently took Betty and John to New Mexico, Kansas, Morocco, Libya, back to Omaha and then to Spokane, where they raised two children, Paul and Karen. After retiring from the Air Force, John became an ordained minister, and Betty took on the challenging role of a pastor's wife. She also returned to work for a time as a secretary.
Betty and family lived in the city of Spokane, but later moved to the Foothills area in view of Mt. Spokane and near the large extended Panther family, whose company they greatly enjoyed. There, they had a large garden and a variety of dogs, cats, and farm animals. Each year, Betty canned many gallons of fruit and vegetables.
In the 1980s, John and Betty moved to Kennewick, Washington to be near their daughter Karen and her family. They later moved to Poulsbo, Washington, near their son Paul and his family, and eventually to Nampa. There, they were also joined by Betty's beloved sister Dorothy until Dorothy's death.
Betty loved her job as a secretary, she loved to cook and she loved to travel. She especially enjoyed traveling around the Pacific Northwest, and was particularly fond of the ocean. But more than anything else, she loved her family. She was a devoted wife and mother and adored her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dorothy, and one grandchild, Britta Panther. She is survived by her husband John, her son and daughter-in-law Paul and Stephanie Panther, her daughter and son-in-law Karen and Fred Markham of Kennewick, seven granddaughters, one grandson and three great-grandsons.
