September 6, 1917 - March 22, 2013
Irene M. Krebs, 95, of Caldwell passed away of natural causes Friday, March 22, 2013. Irene was born September 6, 1917, at Logan, Iowa, to Arvile Greenfield Morris and Dora Heim Morris, the first of seven children. Her given name is Dorothy Irene Morris but she has always been known as Irene.
When she was nine months old, the family moved to Onida, South Dakota, where they purchased a square mile of property from the federal government. They were told it had long ago been a Pony Express station which was improbable but a great idea for the kids' imagination. The family farmed and raised cattle on this property until 1934. When Irene was old enough to go to school, she lived with her grandmother and walked a mile for the first year; the second year a new school was built and she lived at home and rode a horse two miles. She attended high school in Onida, South Dakota which was twenty-eight miles from home. She and her sister boarded there during the school year. Every Friday their dad would come and pick them up for the weekend.
In June 1934 with the Dust Bowl consuming the mid-west, the family moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where she graduated from high school and later from Whitney College (a business school). After graduation she worked for a law firm in Coeur d'Alene and later for the Idaho Compensation Company, initially in Coeur d'Alene and later in Boise. During this period she also worked for the Idaho State Senate as enrolling clerk.
On November 1, 1941, Irene married Carl Krebs in Boise. Carl and Irene lived briefly in Coeur d'Alene and later in Homedale before moving to Caldwell in 1945, where they raised their children, Sandy, Larry and Jerry and were involved in church and community. Carl passed away in September 2006. They were married for almost 65 years.
Irene was a member of the First Christian Church of Caldwell since 1950 and a volunteer at West Valley Medical Center during her retirement years. She worked for the Canyon County Clerk's Office and later for the Wayne Davis law firm until retirement. She was very active in several organizations including the Soroptimists and the PEO. She also worked on behalf of the Idaho Republican party for many years. Irene's interests included travel and photography but she loved nothing more than playing pinochle and bridge and hosting parties with her card clubs.
Irene is survived by her brother Larry Dean Morris, Portland, OR, and her sister Mary Ellen Morris Paulson, Lynnwood, WA; her daughter, Sandra Dulin of Palm Desert, CA; her sons, Larry Krebs of San Jose, CA, and Jerry Krebs of Caldwell; 4 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, 3 April, 2013 at Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, with Pastor Rob Belles officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening Private burial will be at Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell.
