Roy was born at home in 1930, as the 4th, in what was eventually to be 8 children, in the farm country of Churdan, Iowa. He graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1947 and went to work on a farm for a time. In 1951, he joined and proudly served in the United States Navy, being stationed in Japan for 4 years until being honorably discharged in 1955. During that time he gave his heart to the Lord, which changed and blessed his life forever. Upon returning, he enrolled at Pasadena Nazarene College (now Point Loma) to study for the ministry. Music was a very important part of his growing up, so it was no surprise that through music he also met his very talented piano playing and singing future wife, Rachel. She caught his eye while accompanying the quartet he sang in. They were married in the Altadena Church of the Nazarene in 1958 and would have celebrated 55 years of marriage in June.
Roy became a dedicated and loving Pastor in the Church of the Nazarene. His pastorates included South Hill Church of the Nazarene, Spokane, WA (1961-1965), Selah, Washington Church of the Nazarene (1965-1969), Kellogg Church of the Nazarene, Kellogg, ID (1969-1974), and Moses Lake, WA Church of the Nazarene (1974-1980). Upon 'retiring' he became an active member and staff person at the West Valley Church of the Nazarene in Yakima, WA for many years until making his final move to Nampa, ID in 2006. He was so very grateful for the compassionate care, humor, and love he received from the wonderful staff at Karcher Estates Assisted Living the last few months.
Playing guitar, singing with his family, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, going to grandchildren's events, and making new friends in each place they lived were some of his enjoyments later in life. But first and most importantly remained his deep love for God in all that he did, and this was the greatest gift he passed on to his family and others.
Roy was preceded in death by his father James Buckmaster, mother Cecil Buckmaster, and 6 siblings: Dorothy Way, Howard Buckmaster, Wilma Moore , Madonna Butler, Marvin Buckmaster, and Merlin Buckmaster, as well as some nieces and nephews. He is survived by his loving wife Rachel (Plymire) Buckmaster, a sister, Delores Gadberry, his daughters Janice & Wally Holton of Caldwell, ID, and Carla & Dean Hall of Colfax, WA, as well as 7 grandchildren, Wyatt, Morgan, & Ashley Holton, and Carmen, Cacey, Dylan, and Dane Hall, who will miss him dearly.
