Dorothy M Erickson

Dorothy Marie Johnson Erickson died August 13, 2013 from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease. She was born March 21, 1919 in Moscow, Idaho to Ellen A. Schumacher Johnson and Robert B. Johnson. She attended school in several Idaho communities including Mackay, Lewiston, Moscow, Joel, and Miller Tressel as her father's job took the family to various United States Forest Service assignments. She graduated from Hailey High School in June 1937. She attended the University of Idaho 1937-1939, majoring in Music and History.
Growing up in a Forest Service family, her summer months were spent at various US Forest Service locations across Idaho including Dubois, Mackay, Pass Creek, Antelope, Shake Creek and Hailey. A Forest Ranger's job was family oriented and everyone had to participate. Her many activities included packing horses for the trail, working in a fire lookout, acting as a telephone operator and fighting forest fires. She spent her high school days in Hailey, Idaho at the time the Sun Valley Ski Resort was built. She was one of the Hailey High School students recruited to show-off this winter wonderland participating as a demonstration skier in films about the resort.
She married Stan Erickson on September 3, 1939 in Challis, Idaho, and then moved to Pocatello, Idaho. Early in their marriage Stan worked as an accountant at what is now Idaho State University and they served as dormitory Proctors at Farris Hall, a cooperative men's dormitory. During World War II, Dorothy lived in Kemmerer, Wyoming with her parents while Stan served in the US Army. In early March 1946 she sailed to Honolulu, Hawaii on the Matson Liner with their young son Bob. This was the first boat trip allowed to carry dependents into the Pacific Area. Following Stan's discharge from the US Army they moved back to Pocatello.
Dorothy was active in several community organizations. She served as President of the Pocatello Music Club and on two occasions with the Art and Travel Club. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Stars. She was a fifty plus year member of Radiant Chapter #61 and served as President, on three occasions, of the Radiant Afternoon Club. She was an active member of Daughters of the Nile serving as President of Lybia Club in Pocatello. She also served as Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel #1. She was honored by Rotary international
District 5400 as a Benefactor of the Rotary Foundation for services at District meetings and annual conventions over a period of 15 years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley W. Erickson of 68 years and their oldest child Robert S. Erickson (wife Alice Norman Erickson of Boise). She is survived by her son William J Erickson (wife Pat Carter Erickson) of Warden, Washington, daughter Carol Erickson Wiggs (husband Herb) of Houston, Texas and daughter Cheryl Erickson Henderson (husband Greg) of DeSoto, Missouri. Dorothy and Stan have eight grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
She moved to Coventry House in Othello, Washington in 2008 to be closer to her son Bill and his family. Her family wishes to thank all the staff at Coventry House, Othello, Washington and the Assured Hospice of Moses Lake, Washington who took special care of Dorothy in her last years. Private family services will be held in the mountains of Idaho in 2014 to celebrate the lives of Stan and Dorothy.
