Donald D Brooks
January 1, 1928 - March 17, 2013
Loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully March 17, 2013 in Tucson, Arizona.
Don was born January 1, 1928, to Edwin H. and Gladys E. Brooks in the small town of Hunter, Kansas. After graduating from high school in Wetmore, Kansas, Don worked at the Goodyear Tire factory in Topeka, Kansas, and held other jobs in Newport News, Virginia, and Burley, Idaho. It was in Burley where he met and eventually married Marion I. Kircher on May 19, 1951.
In 1955 Don began his career with Garrett Freightlines, starting on the docks in Twin Falls, Idaho. He worked up to long-haul driver for the majority of his 35 years with the company, moving his family to Pocatello, Idaho, in the early 1960s.
Retiring in 1990, he devoted his time to traveling and to his other hobbies and interests, including golf and woodworking. Throughout his life he enjoyed the company of his family and also loved good food, spending time with friends, and playing cards, but his favorite activity was bowling. He and Marion owned a small bowling alley when they were first married and Don was an avid amateur bowler.
Marion preceded him in death in 2002. On August 7, 2004, Don married Elizabeth (Liz) E. Clifton of Tucson, Arizona. They settled together in Tucson, where Don and Liz enjoyed the blessings of a large extended family, spending time with many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Don and Liz traveled even more, visited relatives and friends across the central and western parts of the United States, and were active in bowling leagues, even up to the week before he died.
Don will always be remembered for the love he shared with his immediate and extended family, his loyalty to close friends, his competitive spirit, and his willingness to help anyone at any time.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marion, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth and the following children: David D. Brooks of Pocatello; Thomas R. Brooks of Gilbert, Arizona; Catherine L. Brooks of Pocatello; Raymond E. Clifton of Fountain Valley, California; Kathleen A. Clifton (Krehbiel) of Tucson; Frank E. Clifton of Chandler, Arizona; Scott A. Clifton of Tempe, Arizona; Linda D. Clifton (Hickman) of Mount Orab, Ohio; and Roxanne M. Clifton of Tonganoxie, Kansas. Don is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
A family graveside service will be held June 21, 2013 at Franklin Cemetery in Tescott, Kansas.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a memorial be made in Don's name to Odyssey Hospice House Foundation, 750 E. Foothills Dr., Tucson, AZ 85718.
