Frank Hernandez Obituary

Frank Hernandez
94
Frank Limbs Hernandez, 94, of Eagle, Idaho, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 21, 2014.
Frank was born to Frank and Maria (Limbs) Hernandez in Los Angeles, California on October 10, 1919. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Frank was married to Rose (Bernal) Hernandez on August 30, 1941; they were married 72 years. They had four children: Linda, Frankie, Rick and Dan. Frank is survived by his loving wife, their four children, one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
In his teens, Frank was an amateur boxer with the Golden Gloves program. At the age of 16, Frank joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was stationed in Lompoc, California where he cut fire lines and worked as a truck driver.
Frank entered the United States Marine Corps in 1939. He was stationed in Pre-Communist China. In 1945, during WWII, he fought in the Battle of Okinawa. In September 1951, during the Korean War, he was wounded at Kajon-Ni and awarded the Purple Heart. He completed one tour of duty in Vietnam in 1967. Whenever Frank was called away to serve his country, his rock of stability was his loving wife, Rose, who guarded the home front and took care of their four children.
During his 30 years of service Frank received numerous decorations, including a Certificate of Commendation, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a Combat "V", and he received the Good Conduct Medal seven times. He retired in 1970 as a Master Gunnery Sergeant.
The Marine tradition was carried on by one of Frank's grandsons, one nephew, a niece, and a great nephew.
After retiring, Frank enjoyed volunteering at the local Veterans Hospital. In November 2013, Frank was honored at the 238th Marine Corps Birthday Ball as the oldest living Marine in the state of Idaho to have survived three combat theaters.
In addition to being an American warrior, Frank was also an extremely kind, generous, compassionate human being and an amazing father. Those who were fortunate enough to have known Frank were left with an indelible impression and would never forget him. He was loved by everyone he met. Even though his boxing days were well behind him, he could often be found watching boxing matches or hitting the heavy bag in his garage. He will be greatly missed.
Vigil and rosary services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Boise. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 9 at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Boise. Funeral procession will leave the church at 1:00 p.m. Military honors ceremony will be held at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise at 2:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Bowman Funeral Parlor.

Having the good fortune of growing up across the street from the Hernandez family, Frank was bigger then life to us. He was gracious, kind and always ready to lend a helping hand. We could never have asked for a better friend and neighbor. A true American hero, that will be greatly missed. Our Deepest Condolences.
