Saito, Kiyoe Kae - Ontario
Kiyoe "Kae" Saito March 12, 1922 ~ May 18, 2015 Kiyoe (Kae ) Saito, 93, of Nyssa, Oregon, passed away peacefully Monday, May 18, 2015 at Nyssa Gardens. Kae was born March 12, 1922, in Toppenish, Washington, the daughter of Hachitsuke and Sumiye Matsui. She grew up one of 6 children, in the Yakima Valley of Washington working on the family farm. In 1940, she graduated from Toppenish High School. She traveled to Los Angeles and worked as a housemaid to try to establish California residency and attend Los Angeles City College. Big city life did not agree with her and she returned to Washington. The Matsui family was forced to give up their farm and were sent for internment at Heart Mountain, Wyoming in 1942. Kae worked as the Hospital Dietician for the grand sum of $21.00 a month. Some of the Matsui family, including Kae, traveled to Nyssa, Oregon to work in the sugar beet fields and it was there she met her future husband, Kayno Saito at a camp dance. Kae went to Chicago to attend the Vogue School of Design but returned 8 months later and married Kayno on October 1, 1944. After the war ended, they stayed in Nyssa to farm and raise a family. Kae was involved in JACL, Nyssa PTA, Sunday school teacher at Community Methodist Church, 4-H leader and cub scout den mother. She enjoyed sewing, growing a vegetable garden, doing jigsaw puzzles with family and enjoying her 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was a great cook, never knowing how many extra friends and family would show up at the dinner table. Kae was also the family onion weeding crew boss, herding around the family crew of Saito kids, nieces and their friends. She was also a compassionate caregiver for her parents, in-laws, siblings and children. She is survived by her daughters, Karen Shishido of Nampa, Idaho; Ellen (David) Inada of El Cerrito, California; Jan (Bob) Saito-Beckman of Bend, Oregon; a son, Reid (Kaylene) Saito of Nyssa, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kae is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, Kayno; a grandson, Randy Saito; and a son-in-law, Daniel Shishido and four siblings. A special thank you to Nyssa Gardens staff and XL Hospice for the kind and compassionate care they provided Kae. ________________________ A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Ontario Community Church in Ontario under the direction of Lienkaemper funeral service, Ontario.
