Eugene G. Kirkpatrick
1920 ~ 2014
Gene Kirkpatrick of Boise passed away at the age of 94 on July 9, 2014. If he were writing, Gene would list the cause to be "old age". He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1920 child of George D.D. and Grace. Following a youth of bird hunting, fishing, skiing and schooling, he received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1948 from the University of Utah. Prior to that he joined the U.S. Army
in 1942 and served in World War II
as a 1st Lieutenant primarily in the Philippines for two years. He married Joan (pronounced Jo Ann) in July 1942. In 1950 they settled in Helena, Montana where he was employed by United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co. There, three sons were born: William, John, and Richard. In 1954 Gene transferred Boise and they bought a home where they lived happily until death. Activities during those six decades included supporting the kids sports (Gene rarely missed a game), fishing, reading, dog training (for the boys bird hunting family dogs), and the various travels and vacations. After his retirement in 1985, he and Joan traveled the world extensively. Like Joan, Gene now found himself involved with the downtown YMCA where he quickly became known and constantly sold himself as a grumpy curmudgeon but the Y members and staff quickly figured out that under that gruff exterior was a kind and wonderful person.
Gene is survived by his sons, Bill (and wife Julia) and Richard; grandchildren, Danny and Chris; many great-grandchildren; niece, Judy Giles; his long time caregiver, Gina Chalifoux; long time daughter like friend, Kathy Sticklen; and his faithful dog, Nicholas. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan; son, John; brother, Roger; and sister, Mary Lou. Memorial donations in Gene's memory can be made to the Treasure Valley Family YMCA, ymcatvidaho.org
. A celebration of Gene's life will be organized and held at the Boise Downtown YMCA in about one month.
