Herbert Calvin Schneider
1925-2014
Herbert Calvin Schneider passed away peacefully on February 11, 2014 in Boise, Idaho. He was born in Jefferson City, Missouri on July 18, 1925 to Mattie and Oscar Schneider.
Herb enlisted in the Navy in 1943 when he was 17. During the war he served in the Philippines on a Grumman PBY amphibious plane where he was a bombardier. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Following the war he enrolled at the University of Missouri in Columbia. While there he fell in love with a local girl, Doris Dean Thornton, and they were married on June 18, 1950. Shortly after they were married Herb was called into active duty in the Korean War. Returning to Columbia, Herb got a job with the State Farm Claims Department where he worked until his retirement in 1990.
Herb was always involved in local civic and church organizations. During the late 60's and 70's he was chairman of the Columbia Human Rights Commission.
Herb was a member of Columbia United Church of Christ and was instrumental in starting the Boy Scout Troop there.
Herb loved spending time in the mountains. In 1990 they moved to McCall, Idaho. He was involved in the McCall Community Congregational Church, Pilgrim Cove Board, McCall Downtown Improvement Committee and McCall Senior Citizens.
Herb loved dogs, coffee and people. Most of all he loved his family. He will be greatly missed.
Herb is survived by his wife Doris Schneider, son Eric Schneider(Donna) and daughter Theresa Kelly(Jefferson City); three grandchildren, Kyle, Alison and Marc; one great grandchild Mabry; sister Ruth Keel(St. Louis); brother Art Schneider(Columbia).
A celebration of Herb's life will be held at Cathedral of the Rockies at 11:00 am Friday, February 14.
The family greatly appreciates the loving care of the Emerson House and XL Hospice staff.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Idaho Conservation league.
