Jack Duane Sheppard
1937 - 2013
Jack Duane Sheppard passed away peacefully at home on the morning of June 30th at the ripe old age of 76.
Jack was born April 20th, 1937 in Weiser, ID to Christine Foster and Vernard Earl (Jack) Sheppard. His family moved to Yamhill, OR when he was about 9. He joined the Air Force when he was 17 and served as an aircraft maintenance specialist. He married Kathleen Martin on April 14th, 1955 in Vancouver, WA, while he was stationed at McCord Air Force Base, Tacoma, WA. They celebrated the birth of their daughter, Norma, a year later. After two years in the service, he received a hardship discharge so he could help his dad run the family sawmill at Healdsburg, CA. This is where his second daughter, Christy, was born. The family hen moved back to Yamhill, OR, to help run the family ranch. They welcomed son, Jack Dean to the family in 1958. A year later the family moved to the Council area where Jack logged in partnership with his dad. He eventually purchased the equipment from his father and went into the logging business for himself. He decided to diversify and went into business building roads and drill sites for mining exploration in Idaho, Nevada and Montana. He invested in the stock market and eventually decided to retire. After retiring he devoted his retirement days to his favorite pastimes: camping, hunting, fishing, tending, nurturing and observing wildlife. He loved the mountains and telling tall tales.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen; three children, Norma, Christy, and Jack; his sister Patty (Gary) Kenner; sister-in-law Susan Sheppard; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John, a son-in-law, David Lake and a special cousin Carl E. Sheppard.
A celebration of Jack's life and potluck luncheon will be held 1:00 p.m. Sat. July 13, 2013 at the Council Senior Center.
