Richard Arthur Phelps
November 3, 1940 to January 13, 2014
Richard Arthur (Dick) Phelps passed away peacefully on the evening of January 13th, 2014 in Boise Idaho. His family was at his side.
Dick was born November 3rd, 1940, in Ashton ID, to William Phelps and Hazel Cotterell Phelps. He attended school there until 1955 when the family relocated to Pocatello, ID, where his father worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1959. In June 1964 Dick married Janet Lori Metcalfe in Pocatello. They were blessed with three sons; Barton, Robert and Timothy.
Dick attended Idaho State University for two years, until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. Following basic training he was selected for Officer Candidate School in Virginia. Upon graduating from OCS as a second lieutenant he was assigned to the First Calvary 23rd Engineer Battalion serving in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged from the Army in September 1970 with the rank of Captain.
Dick supported his family working as a salesman, a career at which he excelled. He finished his career working at what was his proudest achievement, learning and understanding the cellular phone industry.
Dick and Janet made their home in Pocatello for many years following his service to his country. Dick retired in 2004 and moved to Boise to be near their children and grandchildren .
Richard was the person everyone described as the nicest guy they ever met. He had a beautiful smile and a sparkle in his eye that drew people to him. His family and friends will miss him and remember the infectious humor, heart, and strength that was so much a part of him.
Richard is survived by his wife, Janet, of 49 years, his sons Barton (Michelle), Robert (Sandi), and Timothy; his seven grandchildren, Joshua, Kayla, Amanda, Jaydon, Justin and Leah; his brother Larry (Margaret) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
