Shirley Thomas Iglesias
1930 ~ 2013
Shirley Thomas Iglesias, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher
and friend passed away August 22, 2013.
She was born April 9, 1930 to L.A. and Ragna Thomas in Ogden, Utah. She spent her early childhood in the town of Kimberly, Idaho and later moved to Boise and Meridian, Idaho where she graduated from high school.
As a student at the University of Oregon, she earned her bachelor degree and teaching certificate. At the end of her senior year, while visiting her home in Boise during the holidays, she met Rudolph Iglesias. They both discovered that they would both be moving to and working in San Diego, California. Coincidentally, they met again on the train traveling to San Diego. Rudy and Shirley were married June 7, 1952.
Shirley worked as an elementary school teacher in the San Diego Unified School District for thirty-two years. She was a member of the teaching staff at Hawthorne, Mac Dowell and Linda Vista Elementary. As a firm and enthusiastic teacher, she inspired her students to achieve academic success and shared her passion for learning.
Shirley was a voracious reader. Along with her love of books, she enjoyed being pampered at the local hair salon, laughing with friends, watching the Padres play baseball, taking occasional excursions to Barona, shopping, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving husband of sixty-one years; Rudolph Iglesias of San Diego, her children; Michael Iglesias of San Diego and Kristi Iglesias Schneider of Temecula, her daughter in law and son in law; Carolina Tapia Iglesias and James Schneider, her six grandsons; Rudy Iglesias, Daniel Iglesias, Michael Iglesias, Joseph Iglesias, Timothy Schneider and Gabriel Schneider and her great-grand daughter; Jaylin Iglesias.
Her subtle sense of humor, generosity and kind spirit will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 3:00.
