Darrell Higgins Obituary
Darrell Roy Higgins 1958 ~ 2011 Darrell Roy Higgins, 53, of Boise, Idaho, said goodbye on 15 April 2011, surrounded by loved ones. His long and courageous journey ended at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise, Idaho, only days after a final, joyful fishing trip with dear friends. Born in Abilene, Texas on 7 January 1958, Darrell was the second son of Heston and Edwina Higgins. A military family, the Higgins moved from Texas to Louisiana, finally settling in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they remained for the majority of Darrell's childhood. Darrell was an outgoing young man, active in scouting, baseball, tennis, and school activities. An outstanding student, he graduated with honors from Harrison High School and the University of Colorado, receiving his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1980. Darrell began his career in Colorado but eventually joined the FONAR Corporation in New York. He spent the 1980's traveling the globe, installing some of the first MRI equipment ever developed. In New York, Darrell met and married Evelyn, with whom he shared the joy of raising three beloved children—Rob, Ruthie, and Erin. Although his health challenges ultimately ended Darrell's career, his devotion to his children was unwavering. Throughout every twist and turn in life's road, his first and final thoughts were of his children. Settling in Boise to be near his brothers' families, Darrell maintained a keen sense of humor and an avid curiosity. He was always learning and experimenting: studying robotics, baking, reading, painting, and learning to play the banjo. When possible, he traveled to see family and friends. In addition to a good pot of red beans and rice, Darrell loved nothing more than the World Series, a well-crafted mystery, and a great day of fishing. A true son of Texas, he was a life-long and loyal Cowboys fan. Darrell was a devoted son to Heston and Edwina Higgins, who preceded him in death. He will be cherished as the loving father of his three children, Rob Higgins of Boise, Idaho and Erin and Ruth Higgins of Maine. He was a true friend and brother to Dennis and Tanya, Brian and Dolly, and Linda Higgins. His sharp wit, common sense, and kind heart will be missed by his loving nieces and nephews—Jared, Adam, Katie, Lily, Patrick, Addie, and Alexandra—as well as his faithful friends, Ron and Janan Morris. All who knew him and called him friend will remember his courage, dignity, and humanity. Family and friends will gather to share memories of Darrell on Monday, April 24th at 4 pm at Summers Funeral Home in Boise, Idaho. Darrell reached out to his community by supporting the Idaho Food Bank. If you would like to honor his memory, please consider doing the same.
