Janice Severn Obituary

Janice Kay Severn May 3, 1949 - Sept. 11, 2011 Janice Kay Severn went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on September 11, 2011. She was born May 3, 1949 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Jan, the second of four children born to Maurice Dean and Gladys Marie Hartruft, grew up in rural Southern Idaho. She loved horses, the great outdoors, all manner of school and other activities, and any and all social events in which she could get involved. She graduated from Twin Falls High School in the spring of 1968, and continued that fall to The University of Idaho. It was there she met the love of her life, David Ross Severn, of Boise, Idaho. They soon married on July 19, 1969. The newly commissioned U.S. Army Officer and his new bride were assigned their first duty station in Stuttgart, Germany. They spent the first three and one half years of their marriage serving their country in southern Germany, Dave as a Captain and Jan as a Department of the Army Civilian secretary. In 1972, upon completion of their military tour of duty, the young couple returned to Boise, Idaho with a few hundred dollars, their two week old son, Dodd, a brand new Porsche and lots of German Cuckoo clocks. It was there in Boise that Dave began his career as a CPA and Jan as an administrative secretary to an independent insurance agent. In an attempt to improve their financial position, they started their Amway business in February 1977. On July 7, 1978 while attending a nondenominational Christian worship church service in Spokane, Washington, they both became born-again Christian Believers. That event changed everything for the better in their lives. They continued to build their Amway Business to an even greater and larger scale. In November 1978 they had established a significant "other income" much greater than their CPA salary. Consequently they retired form the world of public accounting and began growing, expanding and creating larger business enterprises throughout and around the world. Dave and Jan moved to Spokane, Washington in 1982 with their 2 and 10 year old sons to help establish their worldwide Amway business headquarters. In 1986 Jan became an active member of the Christian Bible Study Fellowship Organization for which she served as a bible study discussion leader for the next twenty-five years. She was totally committed to this organization and became an extremely successful leader in it. Her beauty and warm soft words and conduct captured the hearts and minds of many other people. She would always "light up the room" with her sweet spirit, love, joy, laughter and happiness. Jan was a very successful business leader. She was the Executive Vice President of an international business organization. She was a blessed Christian woman and leader. She was an active member of Crossover Church in north Spokane. Her positive outward and upward demeanor together with her infectious bright smile and kind and gentle manner won many hearts to her way of thinking and believing throughout and around the world. A magnetic caring personality and real love for other people constantly drew them to her. She always made other people feel more important than herself. She truly had a Servant's Heart. Jan loved her family, her friends, and her God. She was a precious wife, a wonderful mother, a gracious and loving grandmother and a kind and helping friend to anyone in need. She never failed to perform "random acts of kindness" whenever and wherever an opportunity to do so presented itself. She will be sorely missed on this earth. We can all be comforted by knowing that for followers of Jesus Christ, death means Heaven, Happiness, and Him. Jan ended a 4 year battle against cancer at home in the arms of her loving husband surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her husband David of 42 years; her son Dodd and his wife Renae and their 4 children Jordan, Matthew, Hailey, and James; her son Tyler; and her daughter Kacie Foos and her husband Michael Foos. Her mother, Gladys and father, Maury Hartruft. Her brother Gary Hartruft. Her brother Mike Hartruft, and his wife, Jo. Her sister, Vickie Chandler and her husband Mike. And many other nieces, nephews and cousins. We miss you so, sweet person and friend, Jan. We love you so, precious wife and mother. We look forward with great anticipation to seeing you again in heaven. A time of visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 14 from 10 am to 5 pm and again on Thursday, September 15 from 9 am to 5 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Life Center Church, 1202 North Government Way Spokane, WA at 11 am pm Friday Sept. 16th, to be followed by a graveside service at Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions Cancer Care Northwest Foundation, 5105 E 3rd, Spokane Valley, WA 99212 or online at www.ccnwf.org.

Dave I'm so sorry for the loss of your Flower. I will never forget the 2 of you and know that we will see Jan again in Heaven. I've been in Amway since 1989 even though I backed down from building to personal use I will never forget the fun times I had at your Leadership in Spokane.

Touched By an Angel

They say one person can touch ten-thousand lives,
Without even knowing, she empowered
me from the start.
She personally touched hundreds of people,
Thus influenced more than a million hearts.

I heard her story, sitting in my car,
A laugh that's angelic, contagious tears flow,
Driving in awe, staring up at the stars,
Wondering her beauty, I want to know.

And then it struck me, It embodied her life
A Sprit filled, five minute standing ovation,
A moment in time that told me her life,
What she means to dream builders of many generations.

Grace, Integrity, "A Woman after Gods Own Heart"
She had it then, and now, rests with Him.
Humility, Strength, Love, where do I start,
For this list could go on, the purity of her heart.

I thank God, my life has been
more blessed because of her,
And I know, not just mine,
For I see her beauty in all my up-line
Perfect duplication, as they set the example for me.

In Penny, I see Jan's motherly love and giving spirit.
Lily you emulate Jan's grace and peace.
You are my role model.
Debbie, you are as Jan, You are my friend,
a pillar of light and love, an encourager, always trying
to do what's right.
Julie, always giving, not just in gifts but time,
like Jan, the knowledge and love
you pour out into others,
never ceases to flow.
You are my example.
Laurie, as Jan, you are a rock, Full of beauty, courage and strength.

You see, although I have not met her face to face,
I am blessed to be in the perfect place.
She has set a legacy for us all to see,
A shared dream, A blessed life, Gods perfect harmony.

I remember first listing to both Dave and Jan in Oct. 1987- I was 24yrs. old. A first class couple, a sophisticated couple, folks that are living life as it should be. ON your own terms. They helped in my young development and I've been a better father, husband, and person because of their teachings. Dave yours and Jan's touch will live beyond that which you could ever fathom... Jan now knows the impact she has left behind. We will miss you deeply especially today Christmas eve... We love you

From my family to yours, we wish you all peace and comfort during this time. Jan was an extraordinary member of God's flock and will be missed but always remembered. She made a positive impact on my family which we will be forever grateful. I will see her image everytime I witness a flock of geese or ducks (fond memories of your river property).

Our Prayer For You

When our human words and thoughts are frail,
May God's comfort and peace never fail.
When you are alone and the night seems so long,
May the angels above sing louder their song.

When your heart is sad and tears start to fall,
May you feel our Father's love most of all.
When you grow weary and you struggle to fight,
May Jesus bring strength and courage each day and night.

When loving memories of Jan stir your soul,
May your rejoice in knowing she reached her goal.
We all loved her dearly and miss her here so,
But as believers remember where she is, we too will go.

And when we are all reunited again,
There will be no need for these words or this pen.
Jesus will greet us with Jan smiling at His side,
And in greater love and eternity we will reside.

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
of beautiful birds in the circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I do not die

Dear Dave,

I don't have adequate words to tell of my heartache for you as you struggle to find equilibrium in a world that doesn't cycle around beloved Jan. Although I know you are finding strength in your Savior and in His people, I know it is terribly hard. I remember when our Kimmy was gone, I was in the car at a red light at the corner of Francis and Division and I just sat there a little bit stunned thinking, "And the world keeps going on. The cars keep passing by." Somehow, at that moment it didn't seem right although I knew it was. My world had stopped cold. In the same way, I thought of us in Sunday School, talking and laughing and remembering and the conversations just keep going on but Jan is in Heaven. I know you know it is right but I'm thinking it may feel strange as it did to me. In any case, we so loved and still love her and are so honored to be part of your circle of friends. Jan had fulfilled the prayer I've prayed for myself many times for years now. I've asked the Lord, "Please, I want to finish well. Please help me." Well.......she got my heart's desire and I'm sure it was hers also. She glorified God with her body to the absolute max! What an awesome tribute to an awesome lady with an awesome God! We love you Dave, and will continue to uphold you in prayer.

As part of the Attalah organization down in San Diego, i will always have the memory of Jan- her infectious smile, her laugh, her humor, but most of all her genuine love and concern for people-and people she never knew personnaly. God has used her simple words so often in my life as well as countless others. As she stands before her Lord and Saviour i know she will hear the most precious words that anyone of else yearn for "Well done good and faithful servant." The loss to Severin Family is great as well as to all of us who were blessed, even for a brief moment in time, by her presence. I pray for God's awesome presence, comfort, and strength to get through this time of grieving. Carry on David, we will all see her again SOON. Tom Cheney, La jolla , calif

Thank you Mr. Dave Severn for sharing your loving wife with us all these years. I Had the blessed oportunity to meet you in Reno a few month back, and my life has not been the same since. I listen to your cd's and always feel a sense of calm that I'm doing the right thing. Thanks to you and your beautiful wife I will always have an example of what heaven's love looks like. I saw her on stage at major functions and i could feel what she meant to everyone, how she could make us all laugh just by being transparent. I want to design a life like hers; with my own gifts but always a positive impact player.
I love you both very much.

Dear Dave & family, What a privilege to have known your beloved Jan and you all as well. Philippians 2:14 says, "Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you will become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life." This was Jan to the nth degree. She shone so brightly it eclipsed everyone around her. What a legacy she leaves. And.......what joy that we shall see her again in heaven! Hello Mr. Severn,

Our hearts go out to you and your family in this time of loss. We pray God's angels watch over you, encourage and strengthen you during this moment. My wife and I have not had the pleasure of meeting you both personally, though we've had the privilege of learning from you through the awesome world wide system of education.

We appreciate all you both have done, and continue to do to lift the standard of leadership and Christian marriages everywhere; walking in integrity and leaving an example for us to follow. It is encouraging to see you both battle through the ups and downs of life in good spirit, staying committed to your passion through the process, and enjoying the fruit of your labor which God has blessed. We will never forget the example you both have set as we continue our growth in the best business in the world.

The world is at a loss with Jan's passing, we pray God continue to strengthen, encourage, and energize you and your family through it all...

Dave and family, you are in our hearts and thoughts - we love you! Jan's presence has been such a blessing in our lives and will continue to be. We feel so fortunate to have experienced Jan's kindness and warmth from her incredible talks at events these past few years.

One of our most treasured emotional high points in life so far was when we were joyous participants in a thunderous, 5+ minute standing ovation for Jan in a coliseum of thousands. It was like a crescendo of love that radiated from all of us to Jan and Dave and back to us - a positive, increasing loop of joy and love.

Jan will be in our hearts and thoughts forever - we miss her so. It is so amazing to know that even people who never had the opportunity to see or hear Jan in person will still be able to receive the blessings she has given through the many audio CD talks that have circumnavigated the globe. Her kindness, love, wisdom, generosity and serving spirit will touch thousands and millions to come through this medium - she has left such an incredible legacy of love...

Dear Dave and family, Although you and I have never met, Jan was a very special person to me. I was the teaching leader for BSF when the North Side and South Side classes combined. Jan was so gracious to me during that transition time. She was truly a godly woman, but the things that I remember most are the way she made us all laugh and smile. I loved her sense of humor and her laugh. She loved her family so, and we know that you will miss her terribly. My husband Mark and I are praying for your comfort and strength until you may be united with her again. In Christ's strength and love, Mark and Judy Newbold

This candlelight respects your bright smile, personality, and Christ-likeness. You are and will always be our Diamond Lady, one to whom I can aspire to be like in all your beauty and patience, wisdom and love. Jan, when you held my hand warmly, and looked directly into my eyes, I truly believed that I could become all that God has for me to be. You are a one-of-a-kind lady of class, extreme patience and charisma, who could lighten up any situation.

As Dave says, you are his Proverbs 31 woman. May your husband, children and children’s children call you blessed.

I had always dreamed of shopping with Jan from the first time I heard her speak from stage. Though I never had that dream realized, her grace, smile, laughter and love for her family and her Amway family made her a blessing in our lives. She had said from stage last year in Ontario, California that "My story is not yet done"; how true that was. Jan was given another year to bless all that came to know her or hear her through the wonderful world of WWG. We are better for all she shared in her amazing example of how to live a Godly life. Dave shared that she was truly a Proverbs 31 wife; how I hope her example will provide for many to live in such a way. Our prayers to Dave and their family to find Christ's comfort during this time of loss. Jan's life spanned from 1949 - 2011 ..... but her "dash" will be remembered always to those who were blessed to have her touch even a little portion of their lives.

What a precious gift God gave to us in Jan. Her life has richly been invested into each person she crossed paths with in this life. We are thankful to be two of the many that received her Christ like qualities that she so effortlessly shared. Her beautiful, warm and comforting smile will rest forever in our memory. May the peace that surpasses all understanding continue to hold each of you today and in the days to come.
With much love,

Trying to understand God's divine plan is not always easy, especially when such a beautiful soul is taken from us
earlier then when we're ready...Our hearts are so very heavy for you, Severn family. Dave thank you for selflessly sharing your beautiful wife with us for so many years! She was such an incredible lady! You and Jan have been like a father and mother to us more than you'll ever realize, and we appreciate that so very much!!! We have never stop praying for your amazing family, and we will continue to do so! We love you so very much. Hugs.

Jan Severn - was an amazing person who we met through our association in the Amway business. Truly one of a kind, and the grace she carried herself with her journey these past 4 years was amazing.
We will miss you greatly and look forward to speaking again with you in heaven

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

What a light in this life! When Jan smiled the room brightened. When she laughed people around her felt better. Everyone who knew Jan enjoyed one of God's best creations.
