James (Jim) Francis William Bergin
1944 ~ 2014
James (Jim) Francis William Bergin passed away at a local hospital Tuesday, May 20, 2014 with his daughter, Candice and his wife, Pat at his side. He was born March 11, 1944, the third of four children to Clark and Katherine (Bowers) Bergin in Ilion, New York.
Jim attended Annunciation Grade School and graduated in 1962 from Ilion High School with a Regents Diploma. After graduation, he began a Drafting Apprenticeship Program at General Electric Co. and a course in Engineering at Mohawk Valley Tech Institute in Utica, New York. Thus began his life's work as a Mechanical Design/Draftsman for 20 plus years. He absolutely enjoyed the "detail" of it all.
From 1964-1969, Jim proudly served his country in the US Army Security Agency stationed in Germany.
Toward the end of his Army service, he met and married Alice Sterns. Jim and Alice had two children - Wesley James and Candice Jenene Bergin. This union later ended in divorce.
In 1980, Jim met his "2nd base girl" on a Morrison/Knudsen softball team. They married December 30, 1983 and celebrated 30 years together this past December. Jim and Pat began their life together in Boise, spent 14 years in Spokane, and retired to Boise in 2000.
He enjoyed building things, working in his yard, the Oregon Coast, art and music in the park, day trips to explore new places, anything about WWII, a good book. However, his favorite thing to do was to load his family, tent, sleeping bags, fishing poles and the Bergin Camp Box into his old GMC pickup and head to the streams and mountains of Idaho to camp. Willow Creek, Atlanta, Helen's cabin in Cascade, Red Fish Lake all hold special memories full of love and laughter.
A stroke in 2005 changed a lot of things but there were still nine more years to share.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Katherine Bergin; his brother Thomas Bergin; and a nephew, Thomas Bergin, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Bergin; his son, Wesley J. Bergin (Laurelyn); his daughter, Candice J. Bergin; sisters, Patricia (Joe) Hartigan and Adeline (Don) Dack; grandsons, Brennan and Ashton Bergin; two nieces and two nephews and their children; step-children, Kim Vallette and Mike Thiel and their children.
In October, Candice, Wes, and Pat will journey to Ilion, New York and per Jim's wish, take him home to be inurned close to his parents.
Our five year old great-granddaughter wrote Jim a letter after his death because she didn't get to say goodbye. This is what she said: "I loved you evre sents I met you. I wish that you were still alive because I had a lot to tell you. I love you. Anowenn" We all feel that way, Annowenn. Rest in peace my blue-eyed Irishman.
