David L. Barnett
1939 - 2013
David L. Barnett passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 3, 2013.
David was born January 15, 1939, in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Jesse and Helen Barnett. The family moved to Fresno when David was young, and he graduated from Fresno High School in 1956. Then David entered the University of California at Santa Barbara where he graduated with a BA in Sociology in 1961. David took some time off from college in 1959 to travel through Europe with his friend, Joe Fox. While in Sweden, he met the woman he would later marry, Barbro Ahlström.
David and Barbro were married in Fresno in September, 1961, and promptly drove to Texas where he was inducted into the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. David remained in the Army as part of the Medical Service Corps advancing to the rank of Major before leaving in 1969. While in the Army, David and Barbro travelled the world, raised three sons, and David learned about the health care field.
The family eventually made their home in Boise, Idaho in 1977. Subsequently, David joined Blue Cross of Idaho as Director of Provider Services in 1980. David advanced through the company to become President and CEO in 1991, and led the company through a decade of change and growth that culminated in the establishment of a new headquarters.
David retired from Blue Cross in 2001, and enjoyed his retirement spending time with family, golfing and fishing with friends, and taking long walks with his dog, Molly, at their second home in Shell Beach, California. David is remembered as a man with a quick wit and easy smile, a good story, and deep love of his family. He loved music singing his way through college and playing a tune on the piano and his trusty 4 string guitar whenever the opportunity arose.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Barbro; sons Kris, Mike (Teri) and Jeff; five grandchildren (Sabrina, Annika, Evan, Aaron and Daniel); a sister, Jessica Kaiser (Dan); a brother, Phil Barnett, a large extended family throughout the United States and many good friends.
A celebration of his life will be held on February 16, 2013, at 1 o'clock at Cloverdale Funeral Home in Boise, Idaho. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to United Way or to the donor's favorite charity. The family of David Barnett wishes to thank Dr. Ronald V. Dorn III, MD, BrightStar Care and St. Luke's Hospice.
Condolences for the family may be submitted on David's webpage at www.cloverdalefuneralhome.com
