Robert Elmer Peterson
1923 ~ 2013
Robert Elmer Peterson, DO, died Monday, April 15, 2013 at his home in Meridian, 3 days following his 90th birthday.
Robert was born April 12, 1923 to Elmer and Meta (Folkerts) Peterson. He graduated from high school in Portland, Oregon, then joined the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII. He was injured during combat on the Island of Saipan, and earned two Purple Hearts while serving his country.
When he returned from the war, he met and married Doris (Roberts) Peterson and they moved to Caldwell, Idaho to start their family and begin his optometry practice. Four children were born in a five year span, which made for never a dull moment in the Peterson home. Shortly after the last one left the nest, he was divorced.
"Doc" retired from the optometry practice in the 1980s and moved to Boise, where he lived until a stroke forced him to move into an assisted living home. Most recently he lived in a private care home.
"Doc" is survived by his daughters, Jill 'Jule' Ihrig, Rebecca Spets (Jim), Joy Shantz (Michael); grandchildren, Amy Lund, Brandon Johnston, Natalie Schmechel, Louis Ihrig, Caleb Ihrig, Emily Rose Spets, Brian Spets, and Ruby Shantz; 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson; nieces Linda Gittin, Kathy Aaron, and Glenna Gunn. He was preceded in death by his son Richard, and his sister, Evelyn Freeman.
A graveside service will be held at Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 1:00pm. Viewing will be from 5-7pm on April 18 at Summers Funeral Home, 1205 W. Bannock Street, Boise. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Robert's memorial webpage at
