Miller, Stanley Arthur - Canton
Stanley Arthur Miller Stanley Miller, loving son, husband and father, WWII Army Veteran, and founder of the Stanley Miller Construction Company, passed away on March 23, 2015, at the age of 87. He is survived by Eileen, his wife of 64 years, and six of their children; Joan (Robert) Rogoz, Sally Miller (Chip) Styer, David (Linda) Miller, Steven (Lucy) Miller, Terri (Thom) Krupar and Adam (Mary) Miller, and 25 grandchildren who loved him and depended on him. His eldest son, Michael and a granddaughter, Elizabeth, preceded him in death. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Etta Cairns and Jenny Beaver, and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents were the late Celia (Maxwell) formerly of East Sparta, and Harold Miller formerly of Ruskin, Florida. After serving in the Army stationed in Ober-Ramstadt, Germany, he was honorably discharged, returned home and soon married Eileen, whose parents gave their blessing despite his proclivity to drive too fast and squeal the tires to announce his arrival. He went to work for Coen Oil and Canton Drop Forge, but soon left those to start the business that would become Stanley Miller Construction. His older children remember trips to Cadiz with him for coal destined for neighborhood furnaces, a sideline he pursued. As he built the company, his children also remember their opportunities to work for him, which were sometimes mixed blessings because he was, at the very least, demanding. Some of the many men and women who worked for him might attest to that. Dave, Steve and Terri stuck with it, though, and operate the company today. A smart, strong, and hard-working man, Stanley, with Eileen, operated the company for 40 years. The many buildings in Canton and throughout Ohio that he built or preserved and stand today are also his memorials. His work may have been a foundation, but it was far from his whole life. He and Eileen raised their large family and enjoyed square dancing, card parties, and occasional trips to a casino and elsewhere. With his kids, there were horsey rides and gymnastics in the living room, walks in the woods hunting morels, sled riding on a custom made corrugated aluminum toboggan, which he hauled back up the hill with his Farmall, the swimming pool he built in the back yard, vacations, and later, just sitting and holding his grandchildren, particularly when they needed to nap. He liked to restore old cars and trucks, play poker with friends, ride his motorcycle, and Elmore Leonard's books. He was generous with his time and his treasure, benefitting family, neighbors, his church and many local organizations. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday March 28, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Canton where the procession will form, with Fr. Benson Okpara and Fr. Robert Kahler as concelebrants. Burial will be in Melscheimer Cemetery.
