Doris M. Hanke age 91, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014. She was born in Canton on Jan. 2, 1923, daughter of Elmer and Esther Karcher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, with whom she celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2012. She is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Robert) Nicoson of Phoenix; son, Michael (Marilyn) Hanke of Canton; granddaughters, Kimberly (Joseph) Seaton-Grasso of Phoenix, and Elizabeth (Chad) Roelker of Lebanon, Ohio; grandsons,, Darren (Kari) Krumlauf and Robert Krumlauf of Phoenix, and Christopher (Sara) Hanke of North Royalton, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Kylie Seaton, Jude Grasso, Jeremy Krumlauf and Jessica Krumlauf, all of Phoenix; and Sydney Eileen Roelker of Lebanon. Doris' world revolved around her family, her church and, on fall weekends, Notre Dame football. When her construction worker husband came home in the winter, she had clean clothes warming for him in the dryer. When her son brought home friends from college, she was waiting with food in the oven. When her daughter joined Brownies, she volunteered as a troop assistant. This same desire to please and help carried on with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a soothing voice when family members were troubled and words of wisdom when they sought her advice. And always, she had hugs and kisses, along with the question, 'How are you feeling?' Along the way, Doris ran the hot dog stand at Kresge's downtown Canton store, assembled K-rations in St. Joseph, Mo., during World War II, and worked as a nurses' aide at Aultman Hospital, among other jobs. She loved to dance and belt out Big Band tunes and even when she no longer could dance and was in Bethany Nursing Home, she would sing for and along with anyone who dropped by. The family would like to thank the Baum family and staff at Bethany for participating in the sing-a-long, and for their kind and compassionate care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, April 21, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Canton, with Msgr. Frank Carfagna as Celebrant. Friends may call Monday, April 21 from 9-10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Like her husband, Doris was a great admirer of the Canton Ex-Newsboys Association, which provides clothing and shoes to children in need. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CENA, P.O. Box 20124, Canton, Ohio, 44701-0114. Condolences may be made to: www.lamiellfuneralhome.com Lamiell 330-456-7375) Read Obituary
