'Dottie' Merritt
age 92, of North Canton, formerly of Jupiter, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014. She was born May 28, 1921 in Bridgeport, Conn., to the late Robert V. and Ella (Casserly) Barrett. Her career highlight was as the executive secretary to the president of Union Bank in California. During World War II she was a PFC in Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, and was stationed overseas in Headquarters 8th Air Force Signal Battalion. She held membership in the American Legion for 25 years. She enjoyed playing Bingo; and at age 65, she discovered a passion for bowling that she nurtured for 15 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert V. Merritt; and brother, Robert V. Barrett. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Dale Horning) Merritt of Massillon, Ohio and Sandra (David) Townsend of Ventura, Calif.; grandchildren, Kristen (Chad) Carosello, Rebecca (Randy) Dykes, Jesse Merritt, and Susan Merritt, all of North Canton, Josh, Cody, and Dylan Townsend, all of Ventura, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Nathan, Derrick, and Angelina Carosello, Malia Merritt, and William Dykes; and sister, Rita (Sal) Licata of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Karlo-Libby Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Don King officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, one hour before services at the funeral home. As Dottie loved her dogs, memorial contributions may be made to the Stark County Humane Society, 5100 Peach St NE, Louisville, OH 44641, in lieu of flowers.
