Clyde William Gardner
75, of Canton died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, after an extended illness. Clyde was born on April 17, 1938 in Mt. Holly, N.C. to the late Virginia Gardner and John B. Wallace. After graduating from high school, he served four years in the US Navy and married Shirley Thompson Gardner in 1961. He later married Venetia Gardner. He became a licensed electrician and was one of the first African Americans to work as a Lineman for the Ohio Bell Telephone Company in Ohio. He worked at LTV Republic Steel, later retiring from the NASA Lewis Research Center's ColeJon Division as an Electrical Technician. He was a former member of Mt. Calvary 2nd Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion. During his illness, he continued his spiritual growth through the Stone Crossing Care Center ministries. He is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Wallace and a sister, Vivian Brooks.
He leaves to cherish his memory a brother, William Wallace, of Canton; three daughters, Bernetta (Tony) Snell and Ann (Jerome) Watts of Canton, Sheila Gardner of Columbus, Ohio; one son, Darwin Gardner of Canton; an aunt and two sisters-in-law, Castonia Wallace, Corrine Brown and Thomasine Wallace, all of Canton; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of Canton and a host nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at the Rhoden Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Eric C. Johnson officiating. Visitation will begin at 12 p.m. Special thanks to Tridia Hospice Care and Stone Crossing Care Center.
