Helen Schiltz
91, of Canton passed peacefully Thursday after a short stay at Altercare of Nobles Pond. She was born Feb. 15, 1922, a 'belated valentine' for parents Eva (Bean) and Matthew Gleason of Negaunee, Mich. Helen enjoyed regaling her family with tales of her youth in the 'U.P.' and her days in Detroit, where she worked in the offices of the Ford Motor Co. during World War II. At the end of the war she met Leo J. Schiltz of Canton, who became her companion in marriage for the next 62 years before his passing in 2008.
Also preceding her in death were four brothers, four sisters and a son, Daniel J. Survivors include son, Dennis L. (Stephanie) of Jackson Township; daughter, Mary Ellen (Dwight) Kier of North Canton; daughter, Gail (Jim) Sleighter of Canton; daughter-in-law, Brenda Schiltz of North Canton; sister, Eva Gulas of Seattle, Wash.; brother, Robert (Julie) of Sebring, Fla.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Helen was a loving mother and friend to many. She always enjoyed a good game of cards, following the Cleveland Indians, arm-wrestling with casino slot machines and outings with her 'lunch bunch.' She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Friends may call 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the Lamiell Funeral Home, 1353 Cleveland Ave NW, Canton. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2427 Tuscarawas Street W, Canton, OH, with Helen's nephew, the Rev. David Menegay, as celebrant.
