Irene L. Gray
age 97 of Massillon, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 following a brief illness. She was born May 29, 1916 in Massillon, daughter of the late Leo and Mary (Braun) Heitger. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a 1935 graduate of Washington High School. Irene was a devoted homemaker who also worked for many years as a waitress and cook at F.O.E. 190. She especially loved making candy and baked goods for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will always remember the bottomless candy dish filled with M&M's waiting for them at her front door. Her other hobbies included sewing, ceramics and bingo. Her sense of humor and infectious laugh will be missed by all who knew her.
Irene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Anita Gray and son, James Daniel Gray, all of Massillon; brothers, Robert (Doris) Heitger and James (Barbara) Heitger; sister, Alice Ertle, all of Massillon; sister, Dorothy Sturdevant of SanDiego; grandchildren, Karen Norris, Aaron (Kathy) Gray and Eric Gray all of Massillon, Jessica Gray of North Carolina, Joshua "JJ" Gray and Vanesa Gray, both of California; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Austin Gray, Katelyne and Allison Norris and Andrew and Marybeth Gray. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Eugene Gray who passed away in 1989; son, David Gray who died in 2006; brothers, Howard Heitger and Donald Heitger, sisters; Anna Briggs and Edna Kerrigan.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Heitger Funeral Home - Massillon Chapel. Funeral service will be Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Heitger Funeral Home with Rev. Edward Gretchko officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Faith In Action, 412 Lincoln Way East, Massillon, Ohio 44646 or Crossroads Hospice, 3743 Boettler Oaks Drive, Green, Ohio 44685-6227. The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation for the excellent care of their mother at Hospitality House and by the nurses and staff at Affinity Medical Center and the staff of Crossroads Hospice of Northeast Ohio.
