Joyce M. Carper
age 91, passed away from this life on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Oakhill Manor in Louisville, Ohio. Joyce was born Dec. 18, 1922 in Canton to the late Mary M. (Wenke) and Edwin R. Poling. Joyce was a supporter and nurturer of her family as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She exhibited a fervent but quiet Christian faith. She had worked at the Budget Plan Finance Company for five years before becoming a full time homemaker. Donald M. Carper and Joyce were married on Nov. 3, 1945 by Reverend Nevin Kerst, at Trinity Reformed Church in Canton where Joyce had been a youth leader for three years and a member for 16 years. She was a graduate of Lehman High School, class of 1940. She was a long time Louisville resident and member of Paradise UCC where she was in the United Circle for over 40 years, 60 year member of the Pilot Knob Woman's Club, 55 year member of the Nimishillen Grange, and 36 years as a Board of Elections poll worker. In all these activities she was a tireless worker and made many friends over the years. Joyce was a consummate letter writer, keeping in contact with relatives and friends with cards and letters over her entire adult life. She enjoyed her dogs and hearing of and seeing pets. She was an avid card player especially bridge clubs where she enjoyed the camaraderie of being with the other players. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed playing cards with her as well. Other hobbies included sewing, crocheting, cookie baking, reading and tending her flower gardens.
She is survived by her husband; one daughter Sharon (Jerry Knepper) Thomas; sons Gary (Betty) Carper and Denny (Patti) Carper; Granddaughters, Melanie Thomas, Hope (Kevin) Hill, Kristine (Kevin) Tidrick, Kimberly (Jeff Lambert) McCauley, Erin (Adam) Reinford, Michelle (Michael) Deem, Ceren (Michael) Stone, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild (born May 2, 2014).
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother in-law, Louise and Harley Ball; grandson Randy Carper; best friend Jean Turnbull Carper and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Stier-Israel Funeral Home in Louisville with Pastor Cathy Arble officiating. Calling hours will be 6-8pm Wednesday evening and one hour before services on Thursday morning at the funeral home. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Louisville, Ohio. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Paradise United Church of Christ in Louisville or a .
