Doris Huston Obituary

Mrs. Doris J.
Huston
Our beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, Mrs. Doris J. Huston, was called home to be with our Lord on July 30, 2009.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 32 years, Dr. Sylvester Huston, Jr., and her son, Sylvester Mackensie Huston III, who was an absolute joy to her heart. Doris and Sly began their life together in 1972 and shared a special bond and love that transcended space and time. They began their life together as friends at Eastern Monnonite College and that bond quickly grew into a love and devotion that few have ever known. Their commitment and dedication to each other was blessed by God with the arrival of their son, Mac. She was especially proud that he was able to achieve his goal of receiving his degree and is pursuing advanced studies. She also leaves to cherish her memory five siblings and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren and an extended church family.
Doris was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 and began her courageous battle with this disease. She fought this fight with dignity, unyielding faith and the unconditional love and support of her family and friends. She fought not only for herself, but for those of us who loved her and held her in our thoughts and prayers for years. Through her struggle, she taught us all things are possible for those who put their faith and trust in the Lord, and that he will provide the ultimate victory and reward. Doris was a dedicated educator at Stark State where she was Department Chair for Occupational Therapy, Massage Therapy and Physical Therapy. Her career at Stark spanned more than 30 years and she was blessed to have wonderful coworkers who filled her days with laughter and joy. She was a member of James S. Thomas United Methodist Church here in Canton and accepted Christ as her guide and Savior many years ago. Throughout life's struggles, she was lifted and supported by his love, guidance and mercy. She felt honored and blessed to have such a caring and nurturing church family that she could turn to in good times and in trying times.
Funeral service will be held Monday, August 3, 2009, at 12 p.m. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until 12. p.m Services held at James S. Thomas United Methodist, 3412 Harmont Ave. NE, with Pastor Wilma Roberson eulogizing.

To the Huston Family,
I've had the distinct pleasure of knowing Doris for many years in the heath care profession. She was truly a wonderful, caring person. She had a special gift of impacting the lives of people with whom she came in contact. The world is a better place because she lived.

The Huston Family,
I have been associated with Doris for a long time through the OT community. She was a great person and a good motivator. She is the only one who could ever convince me to present at State Conference and inservices at Stark State. She would just flash that great smile and bat those eyes and could talk you into anything! The last time I saw her she joked about her chemo and her "standing appointment" and that no one would take her seat there! She was a very strong person and faced her illness with much dignity. She will be greatly missed by all. Sincerly, Bonny Reed-Bell

Sly, Mac, extended family and friends -

Be comforted in having known such a woman as Doris J. Huston. Her warmth, caring, groundedness, wry sense of humor, intelligence, drive and leadership, set her apart. I knew her for almost 2 decades, inspired by her dedication to her students in Occupational Therapy, omnipresently intent on running a state of the art program. Ethical, wise, she was also clearly collegial, supportive of her colleagues. Despite time and distance between get-togethers, Doris would always make me welcomed with that beautiful smile of hers, never failing to offer words of encouragement during any tough times, and always willing to celebrate others' success.

Her health struggles required much courage on her part, which she exemplified on a daily basis. She was strong and brave, a leader, a spiritual person, and my colleagues and I shall miss her.

May your hearts heal quickly, and may her memory offer you ongoing comfort. God bless.

Sly and Mack, Doris was the sweetest person I have ever known. I am a better person from knowing her. I think God for her being there to talk to my daughter as she dealt with finding out she had the disease in her lung and continued to mentor her throughout. I think God for her strength and the personal journey I shared with her. Her never ending smile was the light in my darkest times. We loved her, but God loved her best and called her home to rest.
