George Hellmann Obituary

George S. Hellmann 'The Best Samaritan'
89, of Canton, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband for 57 years of Alice (Patrick) Hellmann; father of Mary Burnstad, Laura Flinn, Amy Hume, Chris Hellmann and David Hellmann. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, George was a graduate of Slippery Rock University and earned a Master's Degree from Kent State University. A Veteran of the Army, George served in the military police throughout Asia during World War II. George was a high-school teacher for 32 years at Green high school. Known simply as 'George', he was a teacher, coach, friend and mentor to countless students during his time at Green. Shortly after his retirement from teaching, George continued to help and care for others when he became one of the first volunteers at the Samaritan's Table in conjunction with The Catholic Community League of Canton. Today, a staple in the downtown Canton Community, the Samaritan's Table provides a hot meal for up to 500 less fortunate people and families – every week. George was the head volunteer at the Samaritan's Table for 18 years and during his time of leadership the organization fed hundreds of thousands of people.
George's legacy will live on through his devoted wife, Alice; his children and grandchildren; as well as the countless people and causes he dedicated his life to. George loved his family and his community and he never stopped working to make it a better place. In addition to his wife and five children, George is survived by his family of in-laws and grandkids: Roy, Kim, Andrew and Nicole Burnstad -- Don, Erin Flinn-Danley and her husband Brandon and Patrick Flinn -- Chuck, Kelly, Bailey, Jessie and Quinn Hume -- Jennifer, Sam, Barrett, Rex and Beck Hellmann.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist with the Very Reverend Ronald Klingler as Celebrant. Private entombment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call Monday from 4-6 p.m. at the Lamiell Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank the Pines Nursing home for their great care over the past couple of years. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Pines Nursing Home Activity Fund at 3015 17th Street N.W., Canton, OH 44708. Condolences may be made to:

To the Hellmann Family,

On behalf of the Moriarty family of St. John's, please accept our heartfelt sympathy.

Your father was a very fine man. I can still see him jogging down Vassar Ave. with that towel draped over his shoulders. In the summer heat or in the snow, he'd be out there.

He raised a fine family and did so much good for the community.

God Bless!
