Della J. Organ

Della J. Organ, 83, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013 at her home in Troutdale, Va.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, James A. Organ; her daughters, Linda Organ of Independence, and Sylvia Organ of Asheville, N.C.; grandchildren, Danielle Workman and Jenny Workman, both of Independence, and Ryan Workman of Rosedale, Va.; one great-grandson, Gabriel Carter, of Independence, a dear friend, Janet Roop of West Jefferson, N.C.
Della was born on May 4, 1930 and was raised in Sussex and Peapack-Gladestone, N.J. After graduating from high school in Bernardsville, N.J. (where she made sustaining, lifelong friends) she trained as a medical technologist, and while working full time at a Newark hospital she began college part time at Rutgers University Newark. She completed her Bachelor's of Science degree in Zoology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She assisted her husband in field and laboratory research in herpetology, aiding the discovery of many aspects of salamander life history and ecology in the Whitetop-Mount Rogers and Mountain Lake areas of Virginia.
Della was a homemaker in Teaneck, N.J., where she volunteered as a Girl Scout-Brownie Troop leader, and served as a Consultant aiding other troop leaders. She was active with the Teaneck Women's Club, Evening Membership Division. She served as an active member of the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps for more than 20 years, one of the first three women to join the Corps. She was in the first class trained as an Emergency Medical Technician in that area when that level was created. She was also a CPR instructor. She worked part time for the regional Blood Center as Phlebotomist and became a unit supervisor. She was an avid organic gardener interested in growing flowers and vegetables, and native plants. She was also a bird watcher.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 from the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Konnarock with Pastor Candy O'Meara and Pastor Robert Blevins officiating. Interment was in the Laurel Cemetery. The family received friends Friday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at
