Retha Beatrice Elliott Poe of Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda, Fla., and formerly of Elk Creek, Va., passed away March 4, 2013.
She was born Sept. 19, 1923, and was the daughter of the late Millard and Clemmie Elliott of Elk Creek. She grew up in Ashe County, N.C., and on Jan. 5, 1942, married Dale Evans Poe who predeceased her April 11, 1992. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by sisters Viola Edwards, Danville, Va.; Lena Kirk, Independence, and brother Vonley Elliott of Elk Creek.
Retha retired in 1985 after working 32 years in the textile industry. She worked tirelessly for her family gardening, canning, and sewing. She was also a skilled crotchet craftswoman and enjoyed listening to bluegrass music.
Retha is survived by one son, Edward Poe of Christiansburg, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jim and Janice Conway of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two grandchildren, Dale Poe and wife, Wendy of Kingsport, Tenn., and April Poe Craig and husband, Bill of Raleigh, N.C.; five great grandchildren, Christopher, Danielle and Emily Poe of Kingsport, Tenn., and Madison and Sean Craig of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Virgil Elliott, Mouth of Wilson, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday night, March 9 from 6–8 p.m. at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Lebanon United Methodist Church in Elk Creek, Va. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family respectfully suggests that memorial donations may be made to Lebanon United Methodist Church or the Elk Creek Rescue Squad or Elk Creek Fire Department.
