She was born in Welch, W.Va., to the late Bertha (VanHoy) and Herbert Jewell. She married the late James C. McGrady of Volney on April 14, 1946, with whom she enjoyed 62 wonderful years.
During World War II, she served as a switchboard operator at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. She later worked at both Sprague Electric and Penry Mfg.
She was a longtime member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years.
She was a wonderful cook who took pride in putting out a spread of food that covered the table…no one ever left hungry!
She is survived by four children: Joan and Steve Severt of Gastonia, N.C.; Judy and Ben Hemrick of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Nancy and Audie Ferris of Roanoke; and Jeff and Teresa McGrady of Atkins; sister, Kay Sebastian of Sparta, N.C.
She is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and special friend Arvilly Connor.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Reins-Sturdivant in Independence. The viewing was conducted there on Friday, March 21, from 6-8 p.m., with the funeral at Grassy Creek Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 22.
The family will receive visitors on Friday and Saturday at the Halsey House in Oak Hill. Flowers are appreciated, with the request that any donations be made to Grassy Creek Baptist Church.
