Mary Nancy Blanton Smith, 84, of 3729 Elk Creek Pkwy in Independence passed away Tuesday morning, March 25, 2014, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital.
Ms. Smith was born in Forsyth County, N.C., on Dec 28, 1929, to James Overton Blanton II and Edith Sapp Blanton.
She graduated Hanes High School in 1947, Women's College of UNC in 1951 and earned Master's Degree from Radford University. She retired from her career as a science educator at Oak Hill Academy and Grayson County High School after teaching in other states, including Florida and Massachusetts.
Ms. Smith served her community on Grayson County's Board of Supervisors, including chairmanship, Board of Wytheville Community College, and Twin County Airport Commission.
She was an active member of many professional organizations including Galax-Grayson Retired Teachers and Red Hats.
She was an avid outdoors lover, a snow skier, world traveler, and pilot of her Cessna aircraft - including flying over Pike's Peak in Colorado.
Nancy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend and legendary high school science teacher whose students remember her lovingly and appreciate her tremendous positive influence on and contributions to their lives and occupations today.
Four of the medical personnel who assisted Ms. Smith at Alleghany Hospital were former students and remembered her dedication and passion for teaching and caring for them individually.
She is survived by her husband Robert Dean (Bobby) Smith of the home; children, Cynthia and Bob Westmoreland of Warren Robins, Ga.; Jennifer Smith of Ferniadini Beach, Fla.; Michael Smith of Radford; Amanda and Kimbray Von Grosse of Littleton, Colo.; brother, J.O. Blanton III of Jacksonville, Fla.; Brother-in-law Dr. Charles Hoover of Lexington, N.C.; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service was held Saturday, March 29, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Chapel in Independence. The family received friends an hour before the service. Burial followed in the Independence Cemetery. Rev. Eddie Roland officiated.
