JUNE 11, 1924 - MARCH 22, 2013
ANDERSON, SC - George Simmons, age 88 of 311 Simpson Road, Anderson, SC passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013 at Rainey Hospice House.
Born in New Bedford, MA, he was the son of the late George Simmons and the late Mary Vercellone Simmons Belli. He was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy during World War II serving on a Mine Sweeper, the USS Harold. George continued his boating interest by serving in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a mechanical engineer, having contracted with several companies during his career. He later became president of Lemieux Engineering, Inc. in Massachusetts. George served over 25 years with Lions International in many offices including District Governor of Massachusetts. He was an avid golfer and race fan and competed in pistol shooting competitions. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was involved in the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rita Clemence Begnoche Simmons; two daughters, Joan Anne Laube and her husband Steve of Atlanta, GA and Jean Marie Barrow and her husband Brian of Campobello, SC; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
The Memorial Service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 11:00 am with Father Paul Williams, OFM officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at Bourne National Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lions Clubs International Foundation
