Guthrie, "Tony" - Pelzer  
"Tony" Guthrie Pelzer, SC Wilton Anthony "Tony" Guthrie, 59, joined Jesus on Sunday, August 30, 2015 after battling cancer. Born in Williamston, he was the son of Betty Jane Chapman Guthrie Kellett and the late Wilson Harvey Guthrie. He was formerly employed with L'oreal and a member of New Spring Church. He was president of Tiger Paws Express. Survivors include his mother and step-father, James Kellett of Williamston; fiancée, Cyndi Jones of the home; daughter, Kara Roberts and her fiancé, Andres Acevedo of Piedmont; sister, Wanda Sutherland (Steve) of West Pelzer; step-brother, Butch Kellett of Fork Shoals; step-sister, Patsy Pitts of Greenwood; special nieces, Stephanie S. Owens (Allen) and Lauren S. Brown (Roy); four great nieces and nephews, Cameren, Brylee, Hollyn, Hagan. Visitation will be held from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, at Gray Mortuary, Pelzer. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Anderson. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Association of Anderson, 215 E. Calhoun Street, Anderson, SC 29621 or to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214. Matthews, Bobby - Anderson  
Bobby Matthews Anderson, SC Bobby Hugh "Pop" Matthews, 75, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at his home. Born on August 29, 1940 in Washington, Ga, he was the son of the late Robert and Dorothy Matthews and husband to Cornelia Matthews. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his Daughters: LeAnn (Mike) Harbert, Roxy (Jeff) Meyer, Carol (Jason) Dickerson and Tiffany Matthews; Brother: Danny Matthews; Grandchildren; Laynie (Keith) Lanier, Matt (Brittany) Meyer, Jonn (Brandi) Harbert, Josh Harbert, Jesse Harbert; as well as six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two children: Tina and Kenneth Matthews. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Wednesday September 2, 2015 at the Oakdale Baptist Church and will be officiated by Rev. David Blizzard. Burial will be follow in the Oakdale Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1pm to 2pm prior to the service, Wednesday at the church. Morris, Rev. Larry - Pelzer  
Rev. Larry Morris Pelzer, SC Rev. Larry Anderson Morris, 78, of Wooded Glenn Court, Pelzer SC, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015 at his home. Born on August 19, 1937 in Hartwell, GA, he was the son of the late Clell Rueben "C.L." Morris and Lottie Thompson "Tommie" Sanders Morris. Rev. Morris was a retired Baptist Minister, where he had served the following churches during his over 40 years of ministry: New Prospect Baptist Church, Hartwell GA, Mechanicsville Baptist Church, Darlington SC, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Bowman GA, Keowee Baptist Church and Austin Road Baptist Church both in Honea Path SC and Putnam Baptist Church, Shelby NC. Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Carol Hilley Morris, two sons: Tim Morris of Pelzer SC and Rev. Mike Morris and his wife DeAnna of Pelzer SC and a daughter: Dawn Whitlock and her husband Wade of Greenville SC. Five grandchildren: Cameron Morris, Matthew Morris, Kyle Morris and his wife Olivia, Bailey Whitlock and Conner Whitlock also survive. Rev. Morris was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Owen Morris, Isham Morris, Kenneth Morris and Jack Morris. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 7:00 pm at the Washington Baptist Church, Pelzer SC with Rev. Mark Canipe and Rev. Mike Morris officiating. Burial will be Wednesday at 11:00 at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartwell GA. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Washington Baptist Church, 208 Washington Church Road, Pelzer SC. Rice, Earle McGee - Anderson  
Earle McGee Rice Anderson, SC Earle McGee Rice, an Anderson attorney and community leader for many decades, died on August 28, 2015, at National Health Care of Anderson. During his years of service and leadership in his native Anderson he was known for his sense of fairness, sound judgment, spontaneous wit, and steadfast commitment to his faith. His dedication to family, religion, education, and community service reflected core values which shaped him and which influenced family and friends around him. Born in Anderson on April 25, 1920, the son of Sara Wilhite Rice and Leon Leftwich Rice, he grew up the youngest of four children in the family home on W. Whitner St. Academically he excelled at Furman graduating with honors and at Duke Law School where he was on an academic scholarship. While at Furman he met and later married the former Mary Louise Anderson with whom he had three children, Mary Earle, Jesse Anderson "Andy", and Louisa McGee "Wesa". Following graduation from Furman he volunteered for the Army Air Corps, earned his wings and became a flight instructor and squadron commander during WWII. He graduated from the Command and General Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. After active duty he remained in the Air Force Reserves from which he retired as a Colonel. After completing Duke Law School he returned with his family to Anderson to practice law with his father in the firm, Rice and Rice. In the legal profession his leadership abilities were acknowledged as he became Anderson County Judge from 1949-1963 and President of the Anderson County Bar Association. His community service and leadership extended far beyond his profession into various civic endeavors. Among his leadership positions were: President of the Anderson Kiwanis Club, Trustee of Furman University, Member of the General Board of the S.C. Baptist Convention, Founders Day Speaker at Anderson College, and District Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America. In addition he served on the boards of the Anderson County Hospital Association, YMCA, Hospice of Anderson, Chamber of Commerce and the Anderson Lay School of Theology. During active participation at Grace Episcopal Church he became a Lay Reader, Chalice Bearer, a Stephen Minister, and he was licensed to serve private communion. He was cofounder of and an active participant in the Jimmy Ezelle Intercessory Prayer Group, a men's prayer group established in 1970. Frequently he was asked to speak at the Anderson Place worship services, and he considered these affiliative experiences to be the "highlight of my spiritual month." Following the death of his wife, Mary Louise Rice, he met and later married the former Mary Alice Jackson Hayes with whom he had a daughter, Elizabeth and two stepsons, Zach and Chuck. In addition to Mary Louise Rice, he was predeceased by his daughter, Louisa "Wesa" Rice Lund, who was his law partner, and by his second wife, Mary Alice Rice. Surviving him are his daughter, Mary Earle Rice Haynes of Atlanta, Georgia; son Jesse Anderson "Andy" Rice (Diane), of Roswell, Georgia; daughter Elizabeth Rice English of Marietta, Georgia, and stepsons Zach Rice of Pendleton, South Carolina and New York, New York, and Charles "Chuck" Jackson Rice (Carey) of Clemson, South Carolina. Also surviving him are nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family is deeply grateful to his compassionate and devoted caregiver, Faye Gibbs, and to his dedicated staff members on Station 5 at NHC for their extended, loving care. The family will receive friends in the parlor of Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The Memorial Service will follow at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Grace Episcopal Church, with The Reverend John B. Hardaway, IV officiating. A private family committal service will be held at Old Silver Brook Cemetery. Thomas Smith Starr, SC Thomas "Lamar" Smith, 51, of 405 Williford Rd Starr, passed away at his home on Saturday, August29, 2015. Born in Anderson, SC on November 28, 1963, he was the son of Lonnie Thomas and Shelba Jean Smith, he was also the spouse of Toni Annette Smith. He is survived by daughter, Jessica Lynn Smith Turnage; step daughter, Kelli DeGrave; step son, M.J. DeGrave; brother, Lonnie Dean Smith; sister, Sheila Burleson (Kevin); grandchildren, Nadia Smith, Alayna, Morayah; step grandchildren, Morgan, Kaiden, Aleaha, and Isabella; and grandmother, Ioma Burgess. He is predeceased by his grandmother the Reverend Eunice Smith. Services will be held Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 3pm at the Sosebee Mortuary, South Chapel, and will be officiated by the Rev. Speer, Lewis - Lowndesville  
Lewis Speer Lowndesville, SC Lewis N. Speer, 80, of Lowndesville, husband of the late Shirley Davis Speer, died Monday, August 31, 2015 at the Abbeville Nursing Home. He was born in Abbeville County to the late Beverly Henry Speer and Eva Cann Speer. Mr. Speer proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Jackson Mill in Calhoun Falls and was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church. Mr. Speer was an avid NASCAR fan. Jeff Gordon was his favorite driver and his winning was a source of much pleasure. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Baker Speer and a sister, Alice Ashley. Mr. Speer is survived by a brother, Ben Speer and his wife Carol of Abbeville; two sisters, Helen Speer of Abbeville and Beverly Willis of Bentonia, Mississippi; a very close, special friend, Connie Powell and her family of Lowndesville and a favorite niece Betty White also of Lowndesville. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:00PM Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, September 2 at 3:30PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Scotty Willoughby officiating. Burial will follow in the Smyrna United Methodist Church cemetery. Loretta Stewart Belton, SC Loretta Elizabeth Molihan Stewart, 91, of Belton, widow of the late William "Bill" Stewart, died Sunday August 30, 2015 at her residence. Born in Radcliffe, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George Elmer and Elizabeth Elana Hagerty Molihan. Surviving are her son, William "Pat" Stewart and wife, Diana and two granddaughters, Michele Lee Stewart and Stephanie Elizabeth Stewart all of Belton. She was preceded in death by her sons, Michael J. and Paul T. Stewart and daughter, Yolanda A. Stewart. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Logan, Ohio.
