Army COLONEL RETIRED Ronald E. Kay, 66, as a good soldier, followed orders of the Great Commander and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 26, 2014. He was born in Gastonia, NC a son of the late A.B. and Sara Smith Kay and his loving aunt Ethel Smith. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and the Army National War College and was a Vietnam Veteran. Colonel Kay received many awards and commendations throughout his military career. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Surviving are his cherished wife, Gertie Bell Kay and his beloved daughter, Krystal Savannah Kay; two step daughters, Yvonne Bell-Creason and Dana Lee Bell and five step grandchildren; siblings, Patsy Salyer and her husband Ronnie, Brad Kay and his wife, Rosalind, Joan Howell and her husband David and Rusty Kay and his wife, Angela and Pam McAlister and her husband, David and his three furry companions. He had over 40 nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. One nephew wrote of Colonel Kay, "We will always remember the fun and energetic, sometimes a little crazy, and always brilliant man who was always willing to play and entertain us as kids and such a pleasure to learn from as we got older. We will always hold a piece of him in our hearts." He loved deeply and was loved deeply and will be missed by us all that knew him.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in The Mackey Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park with Full Military Honors. The family will receive friends 5 - 8 p.m .Wednesday in the funeral home.
