CONCORD - Mr. Eugene Banks Simpson, 92, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009, peacefully at home.
There will be a graveside service Saturday, May 2nd at 11a.m. at Carolina Memorial Park, with Gene Shaver officiating.
He was a NASCAR Modified and Sportsman division driver during the 1950's. He raced against NASCAR stats such as Ralph Earnhardt, Ned Jarrett, Dink Widenhouse, Bobby Isaac, Fireball Roberts, Banjo Matthews and Cotton Owens. He was a NACSAR track champion at the Charlotte Fairground Speedway and the old Concord Speedway in the late 1940's and 1950's. He is featured in the Masters of Racing Series racing cards.
Banks was a faithful member of Forest Hills UMC, and was a retired truck driver from Fuller Supply.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Helms Simpson, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Juanita Wilcox Smith
KANNAPOLIS - Juanita Wilcox Smith, 80, died Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Brian Center, Mooresville, after a period of declining health.
She was born Oct. 10, 1928 in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of the late Vance Wilcox and Hattie Powers Wilcox.
She was a member of St. Enoch Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher. She also kept children in her home for years. Later, she worked for the former Cannon Mills Company.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Hubert R. Smith.
The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009 at St. Enoch Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. John Mark Beam. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the church. The family will be at the home of a daughter, Tracie Livengood, 202 N. Enochville Avenue, Kannapolis, NC the remainder of the time.
Survivors include her children, Tommy Smith and wife, Jennifer of Greenville, Hattie Fink and husband, James of Kannapolis, Danny Smith and wife, Donna, of Kannapolis, and Tracie Livengood of Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nona Mae Smith of Kannapolis.
