Elisabet Van Nostrand, 72, a retired newspaper writer and editor who had moved to Susquehanna County, died from cancer on Sept. 22, 2013, at her home near Montrose.

In 1992, she and her husband built a home on farmland near Fairdale, where they raised Scotch Highland cattle for a number of years.
Elisabet was a native of Sweden who immigrated to the United States in 1959 as a Fulbright scholar to attend Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
She subsequently was a reporter and editor for daily newspapers in Estherville, Iowa and Canton, Ill., before becoming a reporter and editorial page editor in Vancouver, Wash., for The Columbian. Before retirement, she was an editorial writer and then news reporter for Newsday in Long Island, N.Y.
She became a naturalized U.S. Citizen in 1973.
In 1982, she won a professional journalism fellowship to attend Stanford University.
She was active in the Susquehanna County Democratic Party and was a precinct committee woman for several years.
Survivors include her husband, Jim; two daughters: Jennifer Banta of Oswego, N.Y., and Tracy Rhodes of Winter Park, Fla.; five grandchildren; and her father, sister and brother in Sweden.
Visitation is on Oct. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bartron-Myer Funeral Home Inc., Montrose, PA 18801
