William Joseph Toomey, Jr., age 70, of Statesville, N.C., passed away December 24, 2012 at W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born August 12, 1942 in Binghamton, N.Y., to the late William J. Toomey, Sr. and Ruth Esther Tanner, he was the oldest of three sons. He graduated from North High School, Binghamton, NY in 1961 and then joined the U.S. Navy where he served as a dental technician during the Vietnam war era. Following his military service he worked as a maître'd at Little Venice Restaurant where he met his beloved wife, Marian, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage.

Bill's career encompassed working and managing in the hospitality and trucking industry. After relocating to N.C., Bill worked as a residential real estate broker, allowing him to work closely with others – an activity which he greatly enjoyed. After retirement, Bill continued his avid reading and spent a great deal of time studying the Bible. His other hobbies included watching NASCAR racing, football and classic movies, as well as staying up to date with current computer technology.

Bill was a wonderful father and grandfather and true to his Irish heritage had a sharp sense of humor, which was appreciated by all that knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Darrow Toomey; stepfather, Edward G. Sedleck; and brother, Bruce E. Sedleck.

Bill is survived by his children; Debra (Jade) Brewer, Montrose, Cindy Tiffany Picarella, and Pamela (Kevin) McCall, Statesville, NC; sister-in-law, Esther Darrow, of Hallstead; brother, Brian (Lynda) Sedleck, Alexis, NC; grandchildren Mandy, Jim, Sean, Alex, Ashley (Nathan) and Joey.

Lyerly Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A graveside service will be held January 2, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the National Veterans Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
