Joseph J. Bartkus, Sr., 85, of Montrose, passed away at his home after an extended illness.

He was born in North Scranton, to the late Stanley F. and Verna (Sadauskas) Bartkus.
His wife Ruth E. Bartkus, and his son Joseph J. Bartkus, Jr., predeceased him.
He is survived by his two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Carpenter and Roseann and Steve Webster; two sons, and daughters-in-law, Steve and Barbara Bartkus and Michael and Sherry Bartkus; seven grandchildren, Tonya Hemenway, Chris Grindall, Joseph Bartkus, III, Tim Bartkus, Donna Bartkus, Caroline Bartkus, Brandon Bartkus; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen Doyle and Betty and Frank Kwader; brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Grace Bartkus; companion and friend, Barbara Overfield; great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was a Navy veteran of WWII and Korea. He owned and operated the Elk Lake Inn from 1958 to 1995. He worked at Bendix from 1965 to 1971 then went to P&G where he retired in 1989.
He was a member of the VFW Ayres-Stone Post # 5642, and the American Legion Garner-Warner Post # 154.
Calling hours were held at the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home, Montrose, on Saturday, June 11, 2011. A graveside service followed at the Holy Name of Mary Cemetery.
