She earlier served as the secretary to the dean of the School of Law at the University of Pittsburgh, and as a cartographic draftsman for the U.S. Army Map Service in Providence, R.I. Before marriage, she was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance in Montrose.

A highlight of her DAR membership came in 2005 when she was named that year's winner of the organization's National Essay Contest. The prize was based on her essay of Sergeant Elijah Whiting, her forbear and Revolutionary War patriot through whose service she became eligible for DAR membership.

She was a life member of Hadassah, the international women's Zionist organization, and was active with her husband, including during his tenure as executive director of the United Church of Northeastern PA.

A 1945 graduate of Montrose High School, Mrs. Carlson received her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude with a double major in sociology and psychology from Queens University, Flushing, N.Y. She also attended Providence Bible Institute, Providence, R.I., Dutchess Community College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and the University of Pittsburgh.
