Thomas Christoff Tsareff, Junior
88, of Speedway, Indiana, died on August 25, 2014. Tom, a resident of Speedway since 1938, retired from General Motors in 1988, after 38 years of service as a metallurgical engineer. He then served as a consultant for SAE until 2012. He was a graduate of Butler University and also studied at Indiana University and the University of Chicago. Mr. Tsareff was a proud military veteran, honoring his country in the Army during the Japanese Occupation after WWII, working as a translator in Japan. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of gunnery sergeant. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserves in 2004.
Tom was an active member of American Legion Post 500, the American Society of Metals, the Society of Aerospace Engineers, and Speedway Christian Church. He was a volunteer at Methodist Hospital for 23 years, both in the Radiology Unit and throughout the hospital, using his gift of language translating for patients and families alike.
Tom is predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara; his parents, Thomas Christoff, Sr. and Iva May Tsareff; and brother, Eugene Tsareff. He is survived by his children, Chris Tsareff of Zionsville, Indiana, Tammy Murray of Speedway, Indiana; and his granddaughter, Ariana Murray of San Diego, California. He is also survived by his sister in law, Bebe Tsareff; and many nieces and nephews.
Viewing is scheduled at Flanner and Buchanan, Washington Park North , on Tuesday, September 2nd, from 10 a.m. to Noon, with services immediately following. Suggested charitable contributions may be made to the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles or the St. Joseph Indian School of South Dakota.
