Moriarty, Mary Katherine Butcher*
Mary Katherine Butcher Moriarty was born on February 2, 1927 and adopted by Gladys and Ernest Butcher of Loogootee, Indiana when she was about two or three years old. She went to first grade in a one-room schoolhouse across the road from the farm where she lived. After graduation from St John's High School in Loogootee in 1944 she attended St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Indianapolis along with four other girls from her hometown, including her cousin and best friend, Mary Strange. It was at St. Vincent's that she met a dashing young physician who had graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and recently completed service in the Army Air Corps. She and John "Jack" Moriarty were married on October 16, 1948, soon after her graduation from nursing school. They had four children, John Michael (Hollywood, FL) Mary Jane, Kathleen Ann, and Susan Roberta. She loved to read and made weekly trips to the library part of her children's lives. She volunteered with the Great Books program and led discussion groups with 7th and 8th grade students for several years at St. Mark's School, trying to make 13 and 14 year-olds appreciate Silas Marner, The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Moby Dick, and The Chemical History of a Candle. Mary Kay loved to travel, and the family made vacation road trips to Florida, the east coast, the Rocky Mountains and southwest, and California. Later there were trips to Japan, Germany, Ireland, Alaska, and the Caribbean. She began her hobby of decorating eggshells in the early 1960's and soon became known for the meticulous scenes she created inside, and the delicate ornamentation that covered the outsides of the enameled hen, duck and goose eggs. She was an admirer of crafts and all things handmade and unique. Mary Kay had her first Multiple Sclerosis attack in spring of 1969. Between periods of disability she would return to her craft work until the disease made it impossible to continue. She was cared for by her devoted husband Jack until he passed away in June of 2004. She died peacefully on April 24 surrounded by her children. Mary Kay is survived by her four children and a wonderful son-in-law, Bill Allen. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 27, 2015 at 7 p.m. in Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home. Friends are invited to gather at the funeral home to greet family members on Monday prior to the service beginning at 4 p.m. Donations in her memory can be made to Indy Reads for literacy education, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, WFYI, or FIDO (Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside).
