Carol Ann Churchman Bales

Carol Bales of Greenwood, IN, passed away on Monday the 12th of August, 2013 in Methodist Hospital (IU Health). She was born in Indianapolis on July 31, 1938. She was the oldest daughter of F.L. and Eleanor M. Churchman. She was the great-granddaughter of F.M. Churchman and early Indianapolis banker. She grew up at Hillside, the Churchman estate.

She was a 1960 Purdue University graduate with a B.S. in Education. She taught 3rd and 4th grade at Beech Grove Central Elementary School, where her father-in-law was the Superintendent. Carol was a member of Delta Gamma, Tri-Kappa, PEO and Symphony South Group. She had a long tenure in the 4-H program, with a wide range of involvement in addition to being a Girl Scout leader. She was a board member of the Marion County Fair, prior to moving to Johnson County. Mrs. Bales enjoyed playing bridge, travel, her grandchildren and winters at Pompano Beach, FL. In addition, Carol was an avid reader and excellent pianist with a keen interest in Churchman family history. While in Florida, she was a member of the Pompano Beach Garden Club. Her condo friends will miss her at the pool!

Carol is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jimmie F. Bales, DDS and three daughters. They are Jamie S. (Don) Just of Andover, KS, Julie K. DelaCuesta of Ft. Wayne, IN and Jodie L. (Dr. Steven) Bales of rural Bluffton, IN. Surviving grandchildren are Amanda, Michael and Evan Just, Courtney and Drew DelaCuesta and Brent, Kristen and Lauren Bales.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 15 in Singleton Com munity Mortuary and Memorial Center , 7602 Madison Ave. from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior the service, 11 a.m., Friday, August 16 at Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ on North and New Jersey Streets. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery.

The family would request that memorial contributions be made to the Indiana 4-H Foundation, Agricultural Administration Building, Room 101, 615 W. State Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907 and , Indianapolis Affiliate, P.O. Box 6069, Dept. 95, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6069.
