Challis Mercer King
85, Carmel, passed away January 17, 2013. She was born August 15, 1927, in New York City, the daughter of the late George and Anna Mercer. She married her high school sweetheart, William E. King Jr. on September 17, 1949. He preceded her in passing on June 15, 2004, after 54 years of marriage.
A member of the National Honor Society, Challis graduated from Shortridge High School where she was ranked 5th in a class of over 500. Challis attended Purdue University but then transferred to be with Bill at Indiana University, where she graduated with honors earning her B.S. in Bacteriology. She also received additional training at Butler University. Challis briefly taught Jr. High science and excelled in being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a talented pianist and exceptional cook who planned family gatherings complete with wonderful traditions. She was a sixty five year member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, former member of the Riviera Club, and a member of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Summer Trace for their care these past eight years.
Mrs. King is survived by her daughter, Catherine King Taylor (John) of Carmel and her son, William Everett King III of Aurora, Colorado. She was so proud of her grandchildren, Collin William Taylor, Jaclyn Challis Taylor Fiesbeck (Colin), Kevin Patrick King, Anna Irene King, and great grandson, Tyden Everett Fiesbeck. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James and Richard.
Services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Flanner and Buchanan - Broad Ripple, 1305 East Broad Ripple Avenue. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
