Donald McIntire Spence

Dec. 9, 1928 - May 15, 2013

Mr. Donald McIntire Spence, 84, went to be with The Lord on May 15, 2013. Born in Decatur, Illinois but an Indiana resident for over eight decades, he lived a life of passion for his faith, family, profession and fellow man. After graduating from Indiana University as a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, he joined the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty as an officer during the Korean War.

Upon his return, he embarked upon an insurance career spanning 60 years with companies including American United Life and National Life. He achieved status as a Life Member of the Million Dollar Roundtable—the pinnacle of his profession. Many local civic and charitable organizations benefited from his involvement over the years. Sertoma, Gideons, Moody's Bible Institute, Christian Business Men's Connection and Prison Fellowship were a few of the many groups he gave his unyielding attention and strength. His extensive life of travel and leisure was also a source of pride. His favorite activities included golf, fishing and sailing, but he enjoyed any activity in which family and friends were involved.

A lifelong man of Christian faith, he spent many years as a member of the Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis and, most recently, with Church at the Crossing and Second Pres. He leaves behind his cherished wife of 13 years, Janet; sister, Betty (Don) Adkinson; son, Dan (Donna) Spence; three daughters, Peggy (Norm) Bristley, Kathy (Jim) Fountain and Jenny (Patrick) Howe; along with grandchildren, Nicole (Jay) Westerlund, Dan Spence, AJ Fountain, Josh Fountain, Justin Fountain, Riley Howe, Spencer Howe and Macy Howe. In heaven, Don reunites with his first wife of 47 years, Anne, and parents, Eber and Margaret Spence.

Services will be held at Church of the Crossing, 9111 Haverstick, Indianapolis, on Monday, June 3, 2013 at 11 a.m., preceded by a family reception line at 10 a.m.
