Edna Murphy

Edna Trent Murphy

Edna Murphy, a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana for many years and recent resident of Moab, Utah passed away at home Saturday, August 17, 2013 on her 98th birthday.

Edna was born in Indianaola, Sunflower County, Mississippi. She graduated Worthington High School in Worthington, Indiana and received her Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1936. As a student, she studied music and education and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She married Arthur Everett Murphy, an Indiana attorney, in 1940. Edna assisted her husband's legal practice as a paralegal secretary. She was an English teacher for Crispus Attucks of IPS and later for Lawrence Township. Edna worked for the United States Government Finance Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis through 2008, retiring at age 94 to Moab, Utah to live with her son and daughter-in-law.

Edna is survived by three children: Penny Murphy Roberson of Westfield, Indiana; Arthur E. Murphy III, of Moab, Utah; and Margaret Murphy Starks of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Edna is predeceased by her husband, Arthur E. Murphy II and parents Calvin and Minnion Ooley Trent.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Edna's life will be held September 29th, 1 p.m. at All Souls Church, 5805 E 56th St., Indianapolis, IN. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made, in Edna's honor, to the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, P.O. Box 6134, Indianapolis, IN 46206.
