Harold William "Harry" Matthews
83, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, died on June 19, 2014. He was born August 28, 1930, to Richard and Mary Matthews, the youngest of six children.
Harold graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1949 and later served in Korea with the U.S. Army. While home on leave December 29, 1951, he married Phyllis Joan Foreman, also of Indianapolis.
Harold is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Harold William ("Bill") Matthews II (Karen), Barbara Rice (Greg), Thomas Matthews, Mark Matthews (Keena), Diane Bartlett, Gail Brown (Rodney), David Matthews and Amy Matthews; sister, Dorothy Petree; grandchildren, Angie Conder (Chuck Williams), Christine Renollet (Howard), Victoria Bartlett, Sam Brown, Zach Pingleton (Hannah), and Levi Pingleton; and great-grandchildren, Lelan Lambert, Mason Renollet, and Kayle Williams, Ayden Pingleton-Lee, Alana Pingleton-Lee, and Weston Pingleton.
He retired from Western Electric after nearly a quarter century when the company closed its plant in Indianapolis. He subsequently launched a second career in woodworking.
He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 3660, the Central Indiana Woodworkers Club, and the American Legion. He and his wife were also former square dancers. In 2013, he was honored by St. Mark's with the St. Joseph Award for his contributions as a woodworker and supporter of the parish.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home where prayers will be said on Monday at 9:30 a.m. prior to Mass. Online condolences may be shared with the family at orileyfuneralhome.com.
