Helen Negley Lawhead

86, passed away Monday, January 21, at her residence. Helen, born in Indianapolis on March 17, 1926, was the daughter of Arthur and Alma Hoover Negley and the sister of Harold H. Negley, former Indiana State School Superintendent.

Helen attended the Western College for Women, later receiving her Master's degree from Butler University. She was the Head Librarian and Media Director at Manual High School for over thirty years. Helen served in leadership roles in numerous committees and organizations, including her alumni group from the Western College for Women, School Librarians of the Indiana State Teacher's Association, Phi Kappa Phi alumni, Butler Alumnae Literary Club, Indianapolis Council of Administrative Women in Education and the faculty executive committee of the National Honor Society. In addition to her tremendous service to the educational community, Helen was a long time member of the Clowes Hall Women's Committee, the Caroline Scott Harrison chapter of the DAR, the Indianapolis Propylaeum, the Delta Kappa Gamma society and the Methodist Hospital Task Core. After a lifetime of professional service, Helen met and married the love of her life, the late Leon Lawhead, in 2000. Attending Second Presbyterian Church in recent years with Leon, Helen was a long time member of the Meridian Street Methodist Church.

She is survived by Helen Davies Negley, niece and husband, Drs. Janet Negley and Owen Wolkowitz, niece and husband Dr. Wayne and Susan Harlan, nephew and wife, Jeff and Suzi Negley and grand nieces and nephews, Gavin and Mikaela Wolkowitz and Tim Harlan, all residing in the Bay Area of California. We will miss her pluck, fortitude and loving heart.

Calling will be held at Flanner and Buchanan - Broad Ripple , 1305 East Broad Ripple Ave., from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, January 25th. A memorial service will be held at the Meridian Street Methodist Church, 55 North Meridian St., on Saturday, January 26th at 10 a.m.
