Jacqueline Woolfolk White
Family and friends mourn the loss, while celebrating the life of Jacqueline Woolfolk White, who passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2013.
Jacqueline "Jackie" was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, the second of three children born to Nellie and Emmett Woolfolk. The Woolfolk household was filled with love and a great respect for education. As a child Jackie enjoyed learning to play the piano and performed in public piano recitals. She was a part of the first graduating class of Ullman High School in Birmingham and later attended Dillard University in New Orleans. Jackie engaged in many activities while at Dillard, including joining the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She also excelled academically, graduating cum laude with a B. A. degree in English in 1956.
During her years at Dillard she met Rev., Dr. Willie White, whom she married shortly after her graduation. The couple soon began raising a family which grew to six children while living in several locations including Chicago, IL; Nashville, TN; St. Peter, MN; Lansing MI; and Indianapolis, IN. They were married for over 32 years until he passed away in January of 1989.
While in Lansing, Jackie earned her Master's degree at Michigan State University. After settling in Indianapolis and seeing her youngest son established in school, she began her teaching career with the Indianapolis Public Schools. Jackie started teaching English at Howe High School and after several years moved to Arlington High School. Her compassion for and ability to work effectively with students led to her taking the position of guidance counselor at Arlington. After 33 years, Jackie retired from Indianapolis Public Schools as the Director of the Guidance Counseling Department at Arlington High School.
Jackie was involved in many pursuits outside of her professional accomplishments. She attended University United Methodist Church and North United Methodist Church for many years. She continually guided and encouraged her six children, was a voracious reader, loved to travel, enjoyed spending time with and supporting family and friends and volunteered for many organizations including the United Methodist Women and the Eiteljorg Museum. Jackie's kind and gentle spirit was a gift to all who knew her and though an irreplaceable loss, her time with us has been and will always be an unforgettable blessing.
Jackie is survived by her children, John Wesley White (Denise), Carol Michelle White, Carla Maurisa White-Brothers, Cheryl Maureen White (Landis York), Dr. Carmen White (Mensa Adinkra) and Charles Wesley White; her grandchildren, John Cameron White, Jacqueline Claire White, Maurice Brothers, Eric Brothers, Aaron Brothers and Hannah Adinkra; her siblings, Odessa Woolfolk and Emmett Woolfolk Jr. In addition, Jackie has many nieces, nephews and other beloved relatives.
Jackie was preceded in death by her mother, Nelly Woolfolk; father, Emmett Woolfolk; husband, Rev, Dr. Willie White, and sister-in-laws, Gloria Woolfolk, Martha, Edna and Francis White, and her sister-in law Gertrude White Hayes with whom she shared a close relationship.
